Ireland: Priest Invites Moslems to Join Him and Give Final ‘Blessing’

I don’t understand this sort of thing at all. I totally get wanting to be neighborly and welcoming to members of other religious communities. But asking them to participate in the Mass itself? What could you possibly be thinking?

Well, to put it bluntly, sin does have a tendency to make people stupid.

From what I’ve seen over the years, some priests fall into a habit of thinking that they are more faithful to God by being disobedient to ‘rules’ which they falsely see as being ‘man-made’. The first sin is the disobedience, and being willing to be disobedient makes one ‘stupid’ enough to try to wiggle around and justify it, and then one gets further and further tangled as ‘pride’ (“I know better than rules”) comes along, another sin to lead to further stupidity, etc.

So the priest in Ireland first chose to elevate his ‘I know better than silly rules, MY ecumenism in being so open, tolerant, and accepting is more pleasing to God’ pride into choosing disobedience “I don’t need to follow any rules made by ‘men’” and then into scandal “Look Eamon, if the priest is doing this it must be good” etc. etc.

The second article describes the protestors as abusing the priest. His parishioners have had to step in to protect him.

I think whatever he may or may not have done he doesn’t deserve to be abused or threatened. And I’m glad he has received support from people around him.

There must be a better way for these protestors to air their concerns rather than resorting to abuse.

I take more umbrage towards the far-right Islamaphobes
For sure. To be clear, I have zero issues with the priest trying to be foster friendly relationships with the local Muslim community. I’m commenting specifically on the issue of involving Islamic ritual in the Mass itself.

If he had invited the local Muslim community to the parish picnic or something, I’d say 👍

This is inappropriate syncretism. The protesters seem to have their own issues too (“Catholic nationalists”?) and apparently did not do this important issue justice.

Incidentally, I recently read that Ireland used to have 80-90 priestly ordinations every year for decades, but as of this year they are down to one. This kind of religious indifferentism kills vocations. If one religion is basically as good as another–if Muslim individuals can bless just like Catholic priests–what’s the point of being a Catholic priest? There is none.
