Virgin Mary statue appears at site where goldmine firm refused a Catholic service
A LARGE statue of the Virgin Mary has been placed close to a Mass rock on land in Co Tyrone where a Canadian goldmine firm refused to allow a Catholic service to be held last year.
No one knows who put up the statue.
The Mass rock dates back to the penal laws when Catholics were forced to practice their faith in secret.
“Mass rocks hold a special place in the communities where they are located because of the religious persecution associated with them.”
(from article in “The Irish News” a http://www.irishnews.com/news/2016/...lent-on-access-to-co-tyrone-mass-rock-748469/ )
Now the local government wants to tear down the statue, as local Catholics adamantly fight against its removal.
