You could ask the Protestant the specific quote/s on this. This is for two things: one, to verify if there is really such a thing said (no quote, no proof), and if there is something written, then on what context was it said.

If i remember correctly, Irenaeus was a premellinialist. (Mot ofthe ante-Nicene fathers were).

As for his views on the atonement… He may not be Protestant, but His views are Catholic (though drawn from an Eastern Christian reflection).
