Irish hierarchy resists Vatican plan to cut diocese, bishops

It’s sad if Ireland needs less dioseses and bishops, presumably reflecting declining Mass attendance and parish closings, but if it makes sense then, well, it’s much like all these parish closings. It must be sad to see a centuries-old diocese merged into another and no doubt there will be some negative repercussions, bishops not able to visit certian parishes as often and so forth, but if streamlining the Church will help in Her mission in the world then we should take our medicine, even if it’s bitter.

At this point I see no sign that the Church in Ireland will turn around in the near future and people will flock back to mass, and with all due respect that’s partially the fault of some of its bishops.

I noted this sentence: “The country also has an aging clerical population, a declining practice rate, and an ever costlier infrastructure to maintain.”. That, sadly, is the bottom line. The Bishops are losing temporal power, and cannot seem to adjust to the new reality brought on by their own past actions.🤷

One can only hope that when all the downsizing, closures, and cutbacks are over; the Irish Church can be rebuilt from a foundation on rock.:coffeeread:
 
How does Ireland compare with Italy in terms of number of active, church-attending Catholics in each diocese, etc. I haven’t heard a lot about reducing the number of dioceses and of bishops in Italy.

I don’t know, but I don’t think the Church in Italy is going through the same level of crisis as in Ireland.
 
I think that decision is based on not so wise bishops who failed the CC. the holy father is cleaning up the house. with the house clean, i am sure we will have many converts and the Church once again will tryumph. the holy father has been saying, we are going to start over but small.
