I should mention: they used to be called The AfroCelt Soundsystem. There may have been one other additional variation on their name at some point…

Makem & Clancy’s Peter Kagen and the Wind 👍

I have it on LP, but no way to play it.
I know this strays from the post a bit but if you are interested, there are USB turntables that converts LPs to CD or MP3 formats. The system is plug-and-play USB and comes with all you need. I bought one but haven’t had the time to try it yet since all my LPs are in storage. Just a FYI. 😉

Trad. Irish instrumental, one of the best around is CHERISH the LADIES [band named after tune of old jig] all women group. I’ve seen them live many times a show you shouldn’t miss!!!

Not an exhaustive list as it’s OTTOMH and it is all over the shop in terms of regional style, trad vs progressive, etc. But loads of good stuff in there.

Check out this website below, especially the Links for groups and solo performers, and the Recordings section. For each recording there is a link to the tune in the Tunes database, if it has been posted there, and you can easily see which tracks are songs and airs and which are jigs/reels/barndances/hornpipes/etc. Bear in mind that most people at this site are passionate Irish trad session players and so many of them are not that impressed with groups such as Gaelic Storm (whose playing style is not at all Irish even though much of their material is) or some of the younger “super groups” who play fast and flashy. But to each their own!

I have been going through some older music I have ,like someone said earlier THE CHIEFTANS are the band! earlier CHIEFTANS when Derick Bell was still alive. He played G strung Harp. Speaking of Harpers anybody heard of Patrick Ball, he plays steel strung harp not gut strung harp.

thesession.org/recordings/index/search?name=patrick+Ball&search_start=0

Edit - the URL is being truncated … try typing or copying http ://www.thesession.org/recordings/index/search?name=patrick+Ball&search_start=0 without the space after http.

6 recordings by him listed at thesession.

Look out for Andrew Lawrence-King’s O’Carolan disc too - a more “period instrument” approach than a trad band would give it, but he also uses the steel-strung harp. Can’t think of the disc title but Google would find it.

I like the Chieftains, but it depends on your outlook … to some pure-drop diehard trad session fanatics, the Chieftains resemble a chamber orchestra and that’s not how they like their trad. I enjoy most of it, though … except the sentimental Plastic Paddy stuff, especially the songs, that get dragged out on St Pats Day for audiences that don’t know tiddly squat about Irish music . 😛

Patrick Ball performs a one man play about O’Carolyn .You are right if you want to hear trad. music find a pub that has a session nite. looking at your list i didn’t see AOIFE CLANCY 2nd gen. musician?

Don’t know that name but glad to have any new recommendations! What does she play?

If you’re in New England . . . Tom Callinan and The Morgans.

AOIFE is one of the Clancy Bros. daughter, she plays stringed inst. & vocals, she performs some times with Cherish the Ladies & has a few albums of her own, folk type like her dad & uncles

I’ll add to the list of recommendations for Altan, Leahy and the Clancy’s. DeDannan are also quite good.

Find the recording Eric Clapton did on classical guitar of “Danny Boy”. REALLY does the song justice (for once). It was done for the PBS special on “Danny Boy”.

I know this is getting away from the subject a little but how about the greatest Irish Tennor who ever lived ,JOHN McCormack 1884-1945 ] anybody listen to him?

Absolutely fantastic!! :clapping: One of the greatest tenors in the world in his day.👍

OK, here are the kinds of songs I’m looking for…INSTRUMENTAL only please! 😃

Breakfast at Lady A’s - Gaelic Storm
The Devil went down to Doolin - Gaelic Storm
After Hours at McGann’s - Gaelic Storm
David’s Jig - Natalie MacMaster
Chasing Rain - Leahy

What other songs do you know that are like these: (i.e. instrumental, upbeat, violin, piano…etc…) even if it’s not technically “Irish” music.

:o

I guess we went out to have a pint or two and listen to some irish music! didn’t you get the note? any way I’m still around. did you listen to any Cape Breton folk music? it’s a very lively celtic type of music.
