Irreverent Rosary?

Is it irreverent to wear a rosary around your neck. I have a bad habbit of losing mine because it falls out of my pocket. Any one know???

You’re not going to an 80s party dressed as Madonna, are you? If you are wearing it for the reasons stated, it’s fine. I wind mine around my wrist sometimes for the same reason you want to wear it around your neck.

I have worn knotted twine rosaries around my neck for years. It used to be very common in sub-saharan Africa for the native people (who often had no pockets!) to do just that. I wear mine underneath my t-shirt so people don’t think I am just wearing jewelry.

I’m wearing one right now (thanks Zooey ) but I only do so around the house. I have a perfectly nice crucifix and Miraculous medal among others that I wear out of doors.

I’d say wearing it around your neck is treating it more reverently than letting it fall out of your pocket, where it could be trod upon, or worse…

I always thought that you werent supposed to wear a Rosary around your neck. Maybe because they (Catholic School) were just trying to prevent us from wearing it as jewlery. Thank you!

You could make or purchase a rosary container (pouch, box, case) to keep the Rosary in your pocket. Wearing it around the neck would be fine, as long as you wear it under your shirt - so it does not look like a fashion statement.

I’m currently reading St. Louis de Montfort’s “Secret of the Rosary,” written sometime in the early 1700’s, and he mentions wearing the Rosary around the neck as a pious practice. I wish I had the book with me to give you a quote.

In my opinion, the important part is that it is worn with reverance. I often see them hanging from rear view mirrors in cars, and it cheers me to see them–I’ll often offer up a quick prayer for the person who is displaying it.

My two cents. I don’t see any problem with wearing a rosary as long as it is worn with the same devotion as you would your miraculous medal or any other sacramental item, consider that some orders of religious/priest wear them as part of their habit. God Bless.

It’s not a fashion statement but now I do like the monks and friars and wear it on my beltloop. It stays there and it doesn’t irritate my neck. But thanks everyone!!! :clapping:
