Our “works” are the things we do, say, or think, purposefully. They are part of what makes us who we are.
If a person does good works, caring for the poor and giving to charity people might describe them as generous.
If a person does evil works, constantly gambling and taking from others, they might be described as greedy.
So if there is a person who is good, has faith, and at least tried to live a life of love but still did evil works. Purgatory would be the place where these evil traits would be purged out of them. It would purify the person’s soul by purging them of something like greed, or pride.
If a person is faithful but did not do good works then. I think they would probably go to purgatory as long as they tried to do good even if they fell into temptation every now and then.
If there is a person who says they have faith in God but goes out and lives an evil life without trying to show any care or love for others then I do not think they would go to purgatory.
“if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,
but do not have love, I gain nothing.”
