Is a mass like this valid?

A parish near me is having a Sunday evening mass geared towards young adults.

Set completely to U2 hits.

Tell me, is this valid as any of the guitar masses of old? Or, is it taking away the focus from the Blessed Sacrament and placing it on a bunch of Irishmen?

I’m a young adult and I live nearby it. Is it seriously offensive to the point that I should call my archdiocesan offices? Or should they be left to sing “In the Name of Love” in peace…?

I believe they’re not supposed to play secular music during the mass.

But the choice of music does not affect the validity of the mass, so it’s still a valid mass.

I had a hunch. I guess if Polka masses are valid, a U2 mass should be just the same…

And this parish is (or was) known to be “normal” compared to neighboring parishes.

Guitar masses began only in the 1960’s; we have Guitar led Youth masses at 5PM Sunday. The Church Rule is Not distracting words or too loud distracting singing from the Mass: Common sense. The Mass is everything.

The USCCB, Each Bishop has his own Rules and guidelines, based on the USCCB Liturgical rules, which must be followed by the Pastor. If the local Bishop has unusual violation of Catholic Rules, like glassware instead of prescribed Sacramental vessels, you should contact the Bishop, with Copy to the Archdiocese. Marcus, it’s not what we think is valid, it’s The Church that decides, and Publishes. We’re not in the confused 1970’s.

Has your Parish’s Mass attendance gone up or down, since the Music changes? How long since the Mass Music change from “normal”?

I think that even if some of the prayers or procedure is neglected by a priest… the will/desire of the congregation to come together for a Mass still lets it be valid??? I think there’s a Canon source for that.

There Pastor is the “Sheppard” of there souls. In that this is a “Private” Mass celebration I would just leave it alone. If it works, some souls could be saved? God used Peter and you and me, so stranger things have happened.

IF it brings kids closer to Christ, then its a good thing.
