Romans 14:23 tells us that a person is bound by his or her conscience even if the action he or she does is not by itself sinful. St Paul uses the example of the Jewish Christians who were unsure about eating meat previously deemed unclean.
However, it is unclear if a person afflicted with scrupulosity is bound by such a rule. Scrupulosity causes the mind to see sin where there is none and often causes a person to unduly restrict their actions. It has been described as “the enemy of faith”.
If this rule was to apply to persons afflicted with scrupulosity, it would appear they cannot give themselves the benefit of the doubt. In practice, this would mean a lifestyle even more restrictive and cautious then they already live. However, the letters of the passage are quite clear. The impute sin on actions which are not done in faith that they are pleasing to God.
Thanks.
