Hello!

I was reading through my religion, and this is one of the questions. (Don’t worry, it isn’t for a test!) And I don’t under this question. Thank you for your help!!

Your question appears incomplete. A “recipient” of what? I’m guessing the original question is asking whether a religious brother or sister is a “recipient” of the Sacrament of Holy Orders. The answer would be no, they don’t receive Holy Orders. Only bishops, priests, and deacons receive Holy Orders. Sorry if my guess isn’t what your question was going after, but I couldn’t think what else the word “recipient” was going after.

Thank you, I was confused myself as the question just asked if they are a recipient. I suppose I should have realized that though, considering I was in the Holy Orders section…:o

Would not a better answer be “For religious sisters, no, since woman cannot receive Holy Orders. For religious brothers, it depends. Certain brothers in certain orders can be ordained deacons, Priests, etc. (e.g. I believe all Franciscans are brothers even though some of them have Holy Orders).”

Since I wasn’t even sure what the OP was asking, and had to take a guess that the issue involved Holy Orders, I didn’t see the appropriateness of going into the technicalities contained in your post. I framed my response in the manner I thought was most consistent with how the original question, incomplete as it was, had been framed. Sorry if you felt my response was lacking in some way.

Not lacking, in fact, it was your analysis in Post #2 that made me realize what the OP was asking - thanks for that, I was lost without it. My response was more directed to the OP so they could follow up as it seemed the question was looking for a “yes” or “no” answer.

Thank you for the answers, and sorry for my question being so vague!

Well, to be fair, there’s a certain confusion between Holy Orders and Consecrated Religious, especially since there are some who participate in both. So, without any angst or drama about the ‘lack’ in your response, it’s reasonable to say that TheDoctor’s response filled in some detail.

Are Consecrated Religious recipients of Holy Orders? No, not per se, and not by virtue of their having taken vows.

Can Consecrated Religious be recipients of Holy Orders? Yes, if they’re men, and if their superior directs them to enter into formation for the diaconate or the priesthood.
