Is a simple act of contrition sufficient to keep one from hell?

I was taught that while in danger of death, a simple ACT OF CONTRITION was sufficient to remove the risk of Hell, until a proper confession was made. Is this a fact or a speculation? If not, what does a traveler do, if the opportunity for confession is missed?

Not a simple, but a perfect act of the contrition is needed if one is in the state of mortal sin. A perfect act of contrition is made with a pure act of sorrow for sin because of one’s love for God, without any concern for oneself. Such is not necessary when one makes use of the Sacrament of Penance.
