Is a zombie still a Person

In a zombie apocalypse, you must defend yourself. But are we to think of our selves as killing people? If it can be avoided, should we not kill a zombie because they are people?

I say they are no-longer people.

That depends on a lot. In current versions of Romero zombie’s they aren’t people but rather thoroughly dead corpses being used as a vehicle by a virus. (And yes I know that’s not how viruses work; tell George Romero that not me.)

Those are preternatural zombies, in which case they could be either thoroughly dead corpses reanimated by demonic possession (Is it infestation if you’re already dead?) or they could be people who are quite alive but are possessed. In the latter case one ought not kill them without grave necessity.

They were dead and their souls are gone, so we can just go to town on them.

I’m having a moat put around my house and I’m filling it with gasoline as soon as Obama lowers the price to say…1.00 a gallon.

Then I can lure a bunch of them in the moat by leaving bags of dirty diapers around…they love babies… and then whooosh! Up in flames you dirty zombies!

Hm, I guess it depends on which book, movie, or video game “rules” we want to follow.

If the zombie is a reanimated corpse, then I would say no, not a person. But if the zombie is afflicted by a disease, or other parasite, then still a person. At least until the monster/alien explodes from their head (for a while my husband was really into playing Resident Evil 4.)

But my knowledge of zombies is rather limited.

I think it depends on the disease and if there is any possible cure.

On the other hand, most cases I’ve seen show them to be either hopelessly braindead, brainless, or animated by something sentient but needs to be released anyways.

So with that in mind… what style of zombies are we talking here?

Good ol Zombie Apocalypse? opens stash of M16s, shotguns, and grenades

Never thought about that before actually, but yeah I agree they are no longer “people”. There soul left when they died. They’re just moving corpses.

I would argue that yes, you can kill zombies. Here is my reason. Part of what makes killing another person so wrong is the killer is prematurely forcing another’s soul to separate from their body. It is for God to decide when spirit separates from flesh, not man. Now, a zombie…they don’t have souls, because they are undead. Their soul departed upon first-death (or death death? I’m making terms up here, but I digress.) SO, without the act of forcefully tearing one’s soul from the physical flesh, could it really be considered murder and thus sinful? I say no. Get those stinkin’ zombies.

Yknow…I’ve been giving some serious thought to this zombie issue. I might have been too hasty in my recommendation to “off 'em”.

If you go and read (or re-read) the encyclical “Evangelizans Zombinum Amicos Cum Amore” I think maybe we should just try to hold their hands during the "Our Father’ and maybe ‘affirm’ them with some applause.

Reap, you have been watching too many horror movies. Zombies do not exist. It is true that Angels ( good and bad ) can make " bodies " out of material they find in the world ( air, dirt, water, etc. ) or perhaps inhabit a deceased body ( if God allowed it ) but these would not be Zombies like in the movies. And you would not recoginze them as zombies because they would move and look like humans but they would not have truely human functions - but they are clever enough to fool us. They certainly fooled Abraham and Jacob.

I factored that in. When you think about the zombies that are in our popular culture are mindless and constantly on the prowl looking for people to eat. Since their entire existence (if you can call it that) is simply hunting and eating. In that regard I think it wouldn’t make any difference if you killed one trying to chew your leg off or picked one off 200 yards away that was entirely oblivious to your presence.

All this talk has me excited for the Walking Dead. One more day!!!
