Yes, abstaining from meat is an absolute on Fridays in Lent, and abstaining from mean should be an absolute every day of the year. I enjoyed that little slip of the finger. I’ve had a very dull afternoon.

Someone mentioned being excused from fasting and abstinence by virtue of health and/or age. As one who is both old and infirm (almost 60 and diabetic, that is) I’m excused from fasting. However, it sure doesn’t hurt me to fast two days in the entire year. I can understand that some people may not be able to fast, even the slight fast we do, but I can’t imagine that there’s any health condition that requires someone to eat meat everyday. I love fish but if one doesn’t like it there are plenty of other things to eat like pasta and cheese and vegetables. The only hard part is when everyone else is chomping on a steak and I have a dried up old hunk of catfish which is the only fish some places serve.
