Abstinence is not “100% effective,” in the sense that insemination can occur without intercourse.

If sperm is near enough to cause pregnancy one is not abstaining from sexual activity.

I don’t think that you can have insemination without intercourse. What is the alternative?

Mary, Virgin Mother of God.

Statistically making abstinence 99.99999% effective since 9 months B.C. 😛

Think about what 100% effective AGAINST WHAT?

PG?

Assuming you’re talking about artificial insemination…

One generally does not seek insemination with the idea they WON’T/Can’t get PG. They are hoping for it. And if they didn’t want to get PG, you can bet they wouldn’t go to a doctor, and pay thousands to be inseminated, while abstaining from actual intercourse in hopes they wouldn’t get PG…

If you abstain from sex, and you don’t go to a doctor for an IUI or IVF, and you’re not raped, and you don’t manage to sit in a puddle of semen while naked… You are not going to get PG…

Unless of course, you are visited by an Angel… I guess Mary is the ONLY person in the world who gets to claim that Abstainence is not 100% effective…

Abstinence is a voluntary restraint from indulging in bodily activities that are widely experienced as giving pleasure. Most frequently, the term refers to sexual abstinence…

In other words your claim was erroneous. Or at least nonsense.

I wonder though, if I were a masochist could I claim that since abstaining would give me pleasure (through self denial) then the only way to avoid that would be to sleep around as much possible?

Abstinence does require more education than “don’t do that.” My mother had a classmate in the 1940s who got pregnant because no one had ever taught her how pregnancy occurs.

More commonly, abstinence fails because the message about what it requires to avoid sexual activity does not get through. You not only have to know what a near occasion of sexual activity is…you have to believe that fully enough to keep yourself in chaperoned situations. If you trust yourself to your own willpower alone, if your think, “We can go this far, just no further,” you will probably go too far. This is why abstinence fails a lot.

Sexual "abstinence"is probably not the best term, because it implies sex before marriage is something good being denied. Its actually something harmful; I’ve personally never seen it improve any of my friends relationships. Chastity is a better term, because it implies refraining from sex until marriage is a good thing.

S&M is already a distortion of sexuality. The goal isn’t to be denied pleasure, but to live virtuously. Mechanically having sex to deny oneself pleasure defeats the whole purpose.

A contact pregnancy. That occurs during genital activity, not necessarily intercourse where sperm can get into the female reproductive tract.
The third definition of intercourse according to Merriam-Webster: physical sexual contact between individuals that involves the genitalia of at least one person[/sup].

Note: of at least one person. So, insemination by itself involves specifically the female genitalia and is between individuals because the male’s sperm is there. So insemination=intercourse, no?

There’s an online poster popular among atheists who try to be witty and it has an image of the Blessed Mother, and on top it reads “Abstinence” while underneath it reads " It’s -]100%/-] 99.999% effective". (see here )

But like another commenter said, abstinence promotion for pregnancy prevention speaks to the *natural * procreative process, not supernatural conception or artificial conception.

Abstinence is the 100% effective prevention of *natural * pregnancy.

If one is fooling around enough to cause insemination without intercourse, one is not being “abstinent”.

To the OP: You’re trying to use technicalities and variations on definitions to argue, which is frankly a very ineffective method of arguing. Either you know what Catholics mean by abstinence, in which case you seem to just be trolling, or you’re misinformed, in which case I’d be glad to explain.

Abstinence, in the Catholic sense of the word (I prefer “living a chaste life as a single person”), isn’t about denying one’s self sexual gratification for some reward later. Various forms of sinful sexual activities have different effects (for example, masturbation can lead to isolationism and premarital sex can lead to a disrespectful attitude towards sexually attractive individuals), but a large majority of these are hurtful to the participants.

Living chastely (not having sex before marriage) is about respecting others, self, and truly experiencing Love, not about denying pleasure.

So even if say, a male and a female are making out in their underwear and the male releases and some sperm happen to wiggle their way through both sets of clothing and impregnate the female, the fact that he released at all is a sign that they weren’t being chaste (the line was likely way before that, but that’s the “yes, that was definitely a no-no” in my book).

Artificial insemination with no sex? That’s all the responibility with none of the fun. Why would anybody do that?
