In a short while I will be graduating from a college here in Indonesia and am right now giving some thought to what I want to do in my life. I’ve thought about acting. It’s an industry I love (I go to the cinema to watch once every two weeks), there are strong actor communities here that provide actors with lots of camaraderie, and with a 200-million something population, Indonesian actors certainly don’t lack for fans or a following. I’m a deeply spiritual person though (I pray the rosary everyday and go to church twice a week) and am worried that God considers acting to be a sinful profession because handsome/beautiful actors and actresses can sometimes induce lust in their viewers. My family and friends consider me a somewhat handsome person and I admit I can be a bit vain sometimes - it’s one of my chief failings that I confess often to my parish priest and one of my reasons why I wanted to be an actor in the first place - to gain love from fans. As a raised Catholic I gave my life to Jesus long ago and he takes first place in my life, but I don’t want to give up acting if I don’t really have to and so I ask your opinion: is acting a sinful profession in your view, or is it the viewers’ own fault if they fall to lust while watching a film? God bless you all.

You like to watch movies. You say you are good looking.

But can you act? Have you ever acted? Are you any good?

Never mind. I’ve decided to drop the whole acting thing after reading a PM from one of our members. It speaks of an artist (painter) suffering in purgatory for the crime of having induced lust in some people through an immodest painting he made before he repented. It made me think twice about the whole affair.

I don’t think God considers acting sinful - but from what you have said your own vainity may be why you should avoid this profession - as this choice for you may not help you live the life you are called to live.

Acting in itself I cannot see being a sin. Acting in a sinful manner, however, would be another story. If you live life in the manner prescribed by God but someone lusts after you, I can hardly imagine you would end up in hell because someone else failed to check themselves. But you know your intentions better than anyone else here.

It can be (but need not be…though it has its particular temptations etc)

Discern well. Discuss much with your confessor/spiritual director your particular case.

Look up the St. Genesius Guild (not completely sure of the name)

I would strongly encourage you not to base major life decisions upon the singular advice of anonymous people on the internet (even a site such as CAF). It would be far, far better for you to seek the counsel of a priest on this matter, someone who knows you and is trained to guide people in these matters.

Acting is not an intrinsically immoral profession. Pope John Paul II was an actor. Don’t forget that. He even wrote a play (“The Jeweler’s Shop”).

Yes, there is lots of garbage in Hollywood, and there are certainly many temptations and crosses to bear for someone in that line of work. But it would be detrimental for good Christian people to abandon the acting profession and leave it solely in the hands of those who do not share our worldview. Remember the old adage: Evil wins when good men do nothing. We need good and faithful Christians in this profession. Otherwise, nothing will ever change and things will only get worse.

Now, does this mean that you specifically should pursue this occupation? No one here can answer that for you. And I would be highly suspicious of anyone who claims otherwise. You need the counsel of a priest, not anonymous internet messageboard users.

I can think of some actors and actresses who are or were devout Christians (even Catholics) such as Jim Cavezel, Loretta Young. There is a radio program from Pacific Garden Mission in Chicago called “Unshackled” that dramatizes protestant conversion stories using professional actors to play the parts. Actors also put out recorded versions of the Bible, the Rosary, and other religious literature. So there are at least some Christians in the profession. Unfortunately there seem to be too many of the other kind! As others have posted here one needs counsel of a priest or other man of God that you can trust, and tons of discernment and prayer.

Good advice. The OP should also discuss this and seek the advice of his family and career counselors too.

You can be an actor and avoid sinning. There are many actors who will not play roles in which they would compromise their morals.

The thing that I always need to examine prior to taking any action is what my true motive and intention is.

Here you have presented motive and intent, but this is what Thomas â Kempis has to say in his book entitled “The Imitation of Christ”:

“Vainglory is a pernicious plague and the pinnacle of pride since it draws a man away from true glory and robs him of heaven’s grace. As long as a man is pleased with himself he is displeasing to God, and as long as he seeks human praise he deprives himself of true virtue”.

Although acting in and of itself isn’t sinful, our reason(s) for wanting to act might be.

2 of my children are actors. I am sorry to say that they have both lost their faith. I believe it is because they have surrounded themselves with atheists, agnostics, those living an openly gay lifestyle, those living together without marriage and those supporting a very liberal lifestyle. They seemed to be strong Christians growing up, gave us no trouble happy to go to church, pray, involved in church activities, and the intention was to support 'good theater". Well, after years of college they now believe “good theater” is what at one time they would have considered sinful, because it is.

I have great hope that they will come back to Christ, and pray for them constantly. I am working on my trusting Jesus in this matter.

If I knew what I know now, I would NEVER have allowed them to major in theater in college. So, my dear, I pray you will go in a different direction in life.

Coco, I will pray for your children too.:signofcross:

Dear coco2,

Cordial greetings and a very good day.

Standards within the acting profession have, without any doubt, drastically declined in recent decades. The prevailing tendency is to focus upon scenes that are sexually provocative or which contain an inordinate amount of gratutious violence and profane language. As if this was not bad enough, there are geneorus helpings of so called ‘nerd’ humour, or rather humour for the intellectually challenged. Modern day film and television, with some very rare exceptions, takes a perverse delight in whatever is repulsive, brutal or otherwise excessively shameful. On screen sexual immodesty and violence are now quite normative. Whilst in the old Greek plays of the ancient world some hideous crimes were committed, these were always done ab or ob scaenam - literally, off the scene, or off the stage, because they were considered to loathsome or cruel, unsuitable to be openly put before decent and civilised audiences. How times have changed, and not for the better. Now directors/producers seem devoid of any moral conscience and are determined to push the envelope ever further, which is why the content of so many modern film and TV productions is grossly indecent and poisonous to virtue.

In view of this, is acting a sinful profession? No, not in and of itself, but it is surely beyond any dispute that the world of acting is in now in a state of chronic moral and cultural deterioration. Any Catholic actor today would certainly have to be highly selective as to which parts and productions he could be involved in. He would probably have to decline more roles than he could accept, making his acting career very stressful and quite problematic in terms of earning his living.

Generally speaking the acting fraternity are very tolerant of so called ‘alternative life styles’ and are renowned for their very lax morality and hedonism, thus a *devout *Catholic would probably feel like a fish our of water among those with such a liberal and godless world-view. Even if he did set out with the firm resolve to remain aloof from all the filth and degradation, at length he would probably be contaminated by the milieu in which he live and moved and had his being. St. Paul says to the Corinthians, “Do not be deceived: Bad company ruins good morals” (I Cor. 15: 33). One is bound to ask as a Catholic, just how long would it be before ones mind is poisoned and ones life is utterly demoralized? Sadly, your children seem to exemplify the truth of which St. Paul speaks, but I pray that they will see the error of their ways soon and return to the Fold in true penitence.

Yes, I think that I would, nowadays, advise young men and women contemplating work in film and TV to reconsider an alternative career path that will be more congenial to their most holy religion. The days when JPII was an actor have long since gone and I suspect that he would have deep misgivings about becoming an actor were he a young Catholic living in the 21st century.

God bless.

Warmest good wishes,

I am so sorry to hear that. I will pray for your children. May the Good Lord seek out His lost sheep and bring them back safely to His fold. Persevere in your prayers for your children, Mary intercedes for a parent’s prayers and God never refuses her. God bless you and your two children.

Words (spoke or written) can induce Lust too.
Yet not even the Catholic Church says that speaking or writing are sinful in of themselves because of that.

At least as far as I know:shrug:

Oh good G-d (forgive the expression)! No, acting (unless you are talking pornographic movies) isn’t sinful! What are we, the Puritans?
