Is Advent REALLY about

Hardly, although almost all of us will meet our LORD with rolled-back eyes 😦

Advent is about waiting for our LORD, whether or not we are able to see Him.

All of the Church’s seasons have many layers of meaning and so it’s quite possible that, for some, Advent is a time to anticipate the coming of Christ at the end of one’s own life, when you will either spend eternity with him or separate from him. I personally haven’t seen this particular focus, but I doesn’t seem “wrong” by any means.

It’s a time to think about how we will meet the Lord, but surely advent is more about the coming of light and life and the end of death?

anticipation… the growing of LIGHT as we light each candle, which we have tied in with the journey to the shortest day, for me and other sufferers from SAD this has a deeper meaning…by Christmas longer days and a rebirth on the way

preparation for the nativity…

a joyful time, holding breath,

There is an eschatological element in regards to Advent though.

Advent is preparing for the celebration of the Nativity, certainly, but it’s also preparing for the Second Coming of Christ at the end of time. See this Sunday’s Gospel Reading (Second Sunday of Advent) Mt 3:1-12

For those who “bear good fruit” this is indeed “waiting in joyful hope!”

I think this is a great, deep, and theologically accurate view.

…death’s approach?
It is not REALLY about that, but it is part of it.

Advent is REALLY about two things: Christ’s second coming (1st Sunday through December 16th), and our preparations to celebrate/commemorate his first coming (December 17th through 24th, O Antiphons).

The mystery of death can be folded into the first aspect, as for each of us, our particular “Second Coming” will be right after our souls depart our bodies.

…death’s approach?
Liturgically, it’s always an onion. Multiple layers and multiple ways that one could approach the subject in a homily.

Based on the readings, Advent is a penitential preparation for the coming of Christ, so yes, it is about death’s approach and our meeting thereafter.

It is also a reflection on the events in the Gospel and the incarnation and birth of our Lord.

And it can also be other things. The above two are the prominent ones.

Advent is about the coming of Christ. It is about the coming of Christ at the end of the world and the coming of Christ at Christmas.
