pride is a sin, but is all pride a sin? can’t people be proud of being a Catholic or to be part of the CC?

The Baltimore Catechism says that pride is “the inordinate seeking of one’s own excellence. It is opposed to the virtue of humility.”

So, pride is always a sin. Being glad that one is a Catholic is not a sin. However, being proud of it means that we believe that we are better than others because we are Catholic. So, taking pride in Catholicism isn’t the right way to put it. We should be glad about it, but not become proud and think of ourselves as better. 🙂

well, that’s not how i meant it when i said it to someone. i said i was proud to be part of the only Church that Christ, himself, founded. so, that was wrong?

No, because that’s not taking glory in your own achievement, rather rejoicing in those of the Church and your saviour.

Besides which, humility doesn’t necessarily mean downplaying any achievement, simply means giving credit where credit is due - to God without whom nothing is possible, rather than yourself.

Be careful when you use the word ALL.
I take pride in a job well done, my kids, my grandkids etc.
So no, not ALL pride is a sin.

Well, if you meant it that way, then the word pride is not meant in the sinful way (I was just saying that, by defenition, pride is a sin). As Lily said, you’re just rejoicing that you’re in God’s church.

yes all pride is wrong
we should not on the other hand be ashamed of being Christian, this we should proclaim but being careful not to sound as if we are superior because of it
remember our faith is a gift from God

Exactly! I see pride as being stubborn. It’s not stubborn to rejoice in being a Christian. 😉
