Is America the new Roman Empire?

We have porn that would make any Roman blush at our fingertips 24/7.
That’s more of a comment on our technology than on our deviance.

When I was a young man, back in the 1970’s, Liberty Avenue in Pittsburgh was the region’s Mecca for smut shops of all types, filthy movies, prostitutes, homosexuality, you name it.

Now its a snooty upper class , yuppie town.

The difference is technology, we have the same number of deviants as we always had, its just that now they are online and at our fingertips. No need for a pimp to get dressed up and drive out in his pimpmobile, he can sit behind a computer screen.

Interestingly, if you overlay a map of the United States over the Roman Empire, Rome aligns perfectly with Las Vegas… Precisely on the spot of Ceasar’s Palace. Scary, very scary.
Do you have pic of that? Would be interesting to see

I still practice my religion freely as do everyone else.
If you look at the cases of Hobby Lobby and the Little Sisters of the Poor, religious outfits who were expected to forsake their religious beliefs to toe the line with the ACA, you can see what people mean.

Same with the Christian bakery who refused to celebrate Gay Marriage, I think was over in Oregon.

For the most part, yes, people are free to follow their religions so far, but there are encroachments being made.

No, because one of our generals said all we want is enough space to bury our dead.

Also, when I read in Revelation about Babylon falling, I can’t help but see America as Babylon. And I’m by no means the first person to make that connection.
I think about this a lot, since so much of our current culture is like that of Rome before and after the time of Christ. Sexual immorality, the disintegration of the family, greed, violence, etc. In Paul’s letters, he lists the common sins of the day, which certainly seem to describe America today.

Our country was founded by men of faith, on assumptions made from faith. The founders never meant for “freedom of religion” to be “freedom from religion”. The loss of a moral compass is the death knell of a nation. I think abortion itself, even without all the other corruption, is sufficient.
The enemy is already at the gates. The walls are about to collapse soon unless we make real repentance happen.
2 Chronicles 7:14 if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

Let us pray that God will, for the sake of the remnant of faithful, will spare the land.

Well, when he started pushing back against his “handlers” bad stuff happened… He tried but it was futile.

He screwed up the Bay of Pigs landing [by canceling the U.S. Navy air strikes].

What was needed was a firm and relentless and ruthless proceeding.

Instead JFK was a vacillating tyro.

At that point Nikita Khrushchev knew that JFK was a lightweight frat boy.

And the Soviets began filling Cuba with missiles.

Which led to the Cuban Missile Crisis.

AND when “The Vietnam crisis” erupted, JFK could not even pronounce Laos correctly.

And you’re comparing this to Christians being thrown to the lions during the Roman Empire ?

Jim

At the end, the final collapse of Rome happened when the tax base imploded. Taxes had become so onerous by that time that landowners migrated away rather than continue to pay taxes. Eventually they continued to walk away even when there was no bid for their land. Cue the tax revenues dropping drastically. The armies sacked the cities they were supposed to be protecting when the pensions disappeared. For today’s equivalent, let’s watch Chicago and Illinois as they deal with their pension shortfalls.

Today? I don’t think it will get that bad here, but if the social welfare payments stop or become worthless, who knows?

St. JFK, pray for us
JFK was many things, but a Saint isn’t one of them. The way he treated his wife alone was horrible, and he was known as not being very religious nor dedicated to his Catholic Faith.

NOTE: I’m not implying that he’s in hell or anything. I’m simply saying he’s no where close to remotely having the credentials to be a canonized Saint, let alone a Servant of God.

A person doesn’t have to be canonized by the Church to be a saint.

In fact, there are probably far more saints in heaven than the Church has canonized.

Did you read my note? I said I’m not implying that he’s in hell. I said he doesn’t have the credentials to be a “canonized Saint”

Regardless, I wouldn’t call my grandfather (who I believe to be in heaven) St. Philip. So I’m not going to call JFK “St. JFK”

Yeah I read that.

Just clarifying that not being canonized doesn’t mean a person isn’t a saint.

Right. A “saint” is a person in heaven. While a “Saint” is a person in heaven who is canonized by the Church.

America is America. I will say though that Western culture is increasingly hostile to the Christian faith. The letters of Paul and such epistles like 1 Peter which describe how Christians are to live when surrounded by a culture that rejects their values is becoming more and more relevant daily.

As always with opinion questions, it’s good to nail down the metrics you would like to use in making an evaluation or comparison.

What metrics or measuring stick would we like to use to measure the virtue of American culture?
Number of murders? Rates of crime? Rates of drug addiction? Treatment of the poor? Church attendance?

There might be lots of opinions on this but I would say that I am
  1. disciple of Christ
    2)American
Always in that order. I do not place my hope in my being American.
