Is an After Life Possible without God?

Why do some people not hesitate to believe that there is an after life, but find the idea of God to be so out there? And, playing Devil’s advocate, what is the argument for there being an afterlife but no God? What is the argument against the previous sentence? (Again, I don’t actually believe that there is an after life without God, but am looking for a good rebuttal incase confronted with this question one day.) Thanks!
 
Sorry, this is not an answer to your question but it is the first thing that came to me when I saw the thread title:
Is an After Life Possible without God? Life is not possible without God!
 
Sure, why not? I think it might depend on what form of an after-life you’re thinking of. If you’re thinking of seeing your ancestors/loved ones and whatnot, then that probably requires a God. If you just want some form of consciousness upon the brain seizing to function, there might be a way that could potentially happen without a God.
 
Considering that all function of our natural bodies – including consciousness, and the externally discernible mind – disperses never to return upon human death, then for any kind of “life” to be restored after that, would require someone or some power beyond nature.

Such a power is very close to the classical idea of God.

That would be in Hell. There’s no God in there.
 
God is the author of life and without God there is no life including after life. His son died on the cross and resurrected to give us everlasting life. That’s the biblical view.

Therefore, personally I do not believe there is any afterlife without God. I might be inclined to ask those who believe such is possible without God what proof they have. Some use Near Death Experiences but scientists have said some of that is just the brain reacting to death and nothing more.

Are you talking about agnostics here, or a specific group/belief/religion?
 
There is an afterlife for all children of God.
That means all mankind. They may not believe in Him… He knows them. We have teachings of heaven. IN MY HOUSE THERE ARE MANY MANSIONS. I GO TO PREPARE YOU A PLACE. IF THIS WERE NOT SO, I WOULD NOT TELL YOU THIS .
There is purgatory for believers who have some reconciliation to work out w God.
Limbo may or may not exist anymore. I mentioned it once and got a response that it was there for believers before Christ’s resurrection. After He rose,
He went to Limbo and emptied it from Abraham, Moses, prophets. I was taught unbaptized babies go
There and are happy. Jesus visits but they can’t get to heaven because of original sin.
Then, hell. Whether believers or not beforehand, we all get to know all after death. That’s why you memorize the mercy chaplet. If prayed at the time of death of a loved one, no matter how bad, they won’t go to hell. Everyone takes the same journey.

Because belief in an afterlife is a belief in a good thing that people want to obtain, but belief in God means that one is responsible for adopting a set of norms for the way one lives. The former is easy; the latter is hard. :sad_yes:

That's what I was looking for, and this only confirms my belief that there is indeed an after life and a God as well. This question popped in my head due to a personal experience that I had, and I could not get it out of my head. Thanks to all who answered.
