My Mother-In-Law is interested in the Catholic faith. Her son, my husband, joined the Church last year and she has begun to attend regularly with us. She has also started RCIA classes. She has really been enjoying them! But, there is a question as to whether she will be able to actually join the Church come Easter. Here is the situation.
She was not raised Catholic. .She had been married once before and then divorced. She remarried shortly afterwards. Her Ex-husband has since passed away. The way I understand it, that “takes care” of that union as far as annulment is concerned. Her second, and current, husband was raised Catholic and was married in the church to his first wife. They were divorced and he remarried but not in the church. He and his second wife were then divorced and she has also passed away. Finally, he and my mother-in-law were married and continue to be.
Our parish priest has informed my mother-in-law that in order for her to become Catholic, her husbands previous marriage will have to be annulled. Is this correct?
We have spoken to a four other priests. Two say this is accurate and two say that it is a misinterpretation and that her **husband’s **past shouldn’t be able to stop **her **from becoming Catholic.
