We are a couple in our late fifties, who have known each other since we were 12 and 13 years old. We were first loves and highschool sweethearts, after many years, we broke up loving each other but due to lack of maturity, misunderstandings, internal pressures and pride at that time we did not end marrying each other.
After almost 30 years of separation, I received a call from him, and 10 months after we got married civilly. We wish to marry through the Catholic church and remain eligible to participate in the sacraments of Holy Communion and confession and I’ll try to expose our reasons.
When we were young and broke up due to a misunderstanding, we continued separate ways and we ended marrying someone else through the Catholic church. We knew we were not honest with our feelings and we did not wish to marry to our fiancees, but due to internal and social pressures, we went ahead with marriage and if this a coincidence or a premonition, both married separately same day, same month, same year.
My previous Catholic marriage ended after almost 5 years, not only I did not love my ex-spouse, I neither wanted to have children with him and filed for divorce. In my husband’s case, he had a long marriage, he separated within the first year of marriage but his wife was pregnant, and the pressure from his mother and his parenthood duties made him go back; he had children who are now adults, but it was a marriage full of uncertainty, lack of love for his wife, levels of infidelities, and never reached true happiness. Things turned worst. He thinks his catholic marriage ended since, during his marriage, his ex-spouse abandoned the Catholic church with her kids to join another religion, against his will and consent, and so from that point on, his ex-spouse interfered with his parent-child relationship based on morals and religious reasons and marriage grew more distant as well as his relationship with his own children. Since then, his ex-spouse has lived an active religious and spiritual life, no longer a catholic and after their divorce, my husband feels penalized and unable to receive communion and confession and be active in his Catholic church because he had a catholic marriage even though it might well be considered invalid from a religious standpoint, at the moment his ex-spouse abandoned the Catholic church. After their separation and divorce and after he married me, it took over 7 years for my sons to resume his relationship with his sons.

Do you think we have strong reasons to initiate annulments?? After 30 years of our separation, God gave us a chance to share our lives together, our golden age and even though we have a civil marriage, we wish to have it recognized by the church, we wish to marry through the Catholic church and remain eligible to participate in the sacraments of Holy Communion and confession.

Please we need your advise.

Thank you and God Bless You.

Hi,

It sounds like you could have grounds for am annulment in that neither of you really wanted to marry your spouses. But do each of you have family members or friends who were aware of this at the time and who can vouch for this now? You will need such witnesses. See your local priest about this. You both are in our prayers.
