Is an anti-Catholic still a godparent?

My son’s godmother has denounced her Catholic faith. She has become extremely anti-Catholic. Is she still to be considered his godmother or should I choose someone as a proxy for him? His godfather is no longer with the family, so I am concerned that my son no longer has any godparent. Thank you for any information.

She is still your son’s godmother, and will always be his godmother, because she stood as an official witness of the baptism. However, she is no longer qualified to assist you in your son’s religious education. I recommend asking a Catholic whose orthodoxy and spiritual maturity you trust to be a spiritual mentor to your son and to assist you in his religious education. In time, your son may choose this person to be his confirmation sponsor. Should his godmother find her way back to the Church – and you should impress upon your son his responsibility to pray for her – she should, of course, be welcomed to assist again in his religious education.

What do you mean by “no longer with the family”? If you are referring to divorce, that has nothing to do with your son, and his godfather should be encouraged to continue to meet the responsibilities of godparenthood he accepted at your son’s baptism. If, for whatever reason, that is not possible, then he will always be your son’s godfather but you will have to rely on the spiritual mentor to be an active religious influence in your son’s life.
