Is anyone changing the way they receive communion because of the swine flu?

Dear Lord,
We ask your blessings on all of us for so very many things not the least of which is the Swine Flu outbreak.
Please give all the country’s involved wisdom & your protection.

I think this part of Pug’s post is something that ought to wrap this up for all of us.

I have been Catholic my entire life and for most of my life I have received Holy Communion on the tongue and for the last 10 years I have received both the Precious Body (on the tongue) and the Precious Blood from the chalice.

Now, how would any of us know IF any person around us or anywhere else in that Church had a contagious disease or not? It’s not like it shows…(usually)_and yet…I am still alive, which only proves my point, receiving Jesus in Holy Communion doesn’t make us sick!! Like I said earlier, I would obey whatever the Bishop deceided about this but…I think we all need to be level headed about this, wouldn’t we all pretty much be dead by now or at least in dire straights if receiving this way would be making us sick?

I will add one thing ----- If you are sick STAY HOME. Stay home from work, shopping and yes, even Church.

I have to agree with some of the posters here. Don’t freak over the flu. As far as i know there haven’t been any deaths in the US only in mexico. Why because of hygenie and basic living conditions. We have running water and medicine. Also they cases are spread out so we don’t have hosptials being over run with it. If you do the normal stuff in dealing with the flu and cold season and use common sense then you will most likely be fine. Don’t hold hands with anyone or do the sign of peace. The sign of peace can be just an acknowledgement of the meeting of the eyes and a nod between two people.

Doctors are trying to figure out why it has been so much more deadly in mexico then anywhere else and they are starting to criticze the mexican gov’t handling of the situtation because they still haven’t pen pointed where it start or interviewed those who are sick. I think this is more of a failure with the mexican gov’t and their health response then necessarly that this is going to rise to the level of a pandemic.

I hate to tell you this, but, there are some areas of Texas that do not have running water. These are called Colonias and my home county Webb has many such areas. While the state and federal governments are finally doing something to help these folks out, there are still areas that literally have to have water trucked into them. Some folks will go and get water by the barrels. There are also little mission parishes that have a priest come once of twice a week to celebrate Mass.

So, these conditions to do exist, even in our beloved Texas.
 
I didn’t partake of the holy blood this past Sunday. I usually leave this type of thing in God’s hands, but my wife insisted since we were quite ill about 3 weeks ago. The prospect of becoming ill again prompted our decision.

I always, however, take communion on the tongue. I will continue to do so.
 
Don’t pooh pooh this outbreak as if it were nothing…It can intensify, like the one in 1918 did…It started off like this as mild…They don’t know what will happen when the flu season starts in the fall…I have been reading articles written by people trained in this field that are well respected

It is better to rer on the side of caution…God gave us a brain to think with

I certainly don’t think people are not clean that have contracted this bug, just because someone is poor doesn’t mean they are dirty, or lax in their sanitary practices

There are people with money that are quite dirty…Mother Theresa would qualify as someone who might not have had running water, and I am sure she used good hygiene
 
This virus is something to worry about. The comments about hands being more contaminated than mouths is not well grounded in fact at all.

I have kids and an elderly parent to take care of and although it’s not in scripture I do NOT think God rewards careless or those who dare Him to keep them from getting sick despite risky behavior…

I won’t put my health and thus my family’s health at risk by taking the host on the tongue especially when I get the same sacrament either way.

I’ll risk, perhaps, a priest touching a hand where the virus MAY have survived rather than a tongue where the virus for sure will have survived.
 
at our church the priest is going to use a small catapult and the EMOHC’s will be issued slingshots and super soakers and we just stay in our seats and open wide.
 
Nope. I receive the same way for both forms of the Mass (OF and EF), kneeling at the Communion Rail.
 
I won’t change the way that I receive because the flu or colds are going around. But I will refrain from receiving from the cup if I am ill and capable of speading something.
 
My bishop just announced communion only under one kind and communion only in hand (even for the EF Mass) until we get a handle on this swine flu situation.
 
Perhaps Austin, TX. I know they’re only serving under one species now.

Actually, I’m in Laredo, just across the border from Mexico. We have not yet heard anything about receiving under one species or receiving via the hand. The only thing the bishop has sent out is the standard precautionary measures about healthcare: cleaning one’s hands, sneezing and coughing into tissue, etc.

Here is something interesting. I had to drive around downtown today. Our downtown leads right into the pedestrian/vehicular bridge. Yesterday, the Tamaulipan State governor ordered all schools closed until further notice. I saw a lot of children with masks on walking around downtown. There were also quite a few people wearing masks. It makes me wonder. The children were asked to stay home for a reason. Why bring them across?🤷

The President of Mexcio ordered all schools closed in mexico until May 6. it appears most of the students were on thebeach today.

You will only have something that will spread to others IF you CATCH it… I think that’s the point. So, if you refrain from receiving the blood of Christ… will that help all the others, inside and outside of Mass and the church that will catch it???

West Nile is a real problem here. It peaked several years back, and we didn’t even have any crows around for about 5 years. I saw 2 of them for the first time this year. I hope common sense and cool heads will prevail. Front page of MSNBC claiming that “hundreds” of schoolchildren are showing “symptoms” of swine flu. It’s all becoming a bit hysterical, I think.

I do have concerns about shaking hands during the Sign of Peace, though. I think it would be inappropriate to pull out your hand sanitizer during the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
