Over the past couple weeks I have heard the following; (this isn’t just about foot washing - please read the whole thing)

From a priest at Mass:
Pope Francis is teaching us we no longer have to be trapped by the laws of the Church that do not make sense. By washing women’s feet he showed us that we can ignore them (many of us have been for years anyway), that we are smart people and can figure things out for ourselves.

From numerous people in support of gay marriage:
We have new hope in Pope Francis. He is removing the shroud of darkness from the Church and will bring us into the new century where we all have equal rights. His message of love and inclusion is a breath of fresh air for gay marriage.

From numerous people who want women priests:
Thank God for Pope Francis. We finally have a shot at equal rights for women.

Have any of you experienced this? What is going on?
I haven’t experienced any of it.

It has only been 3 weeks since his installation. As time goes by, they will certainly be surprised at how mistaken they are.

This priest is wrong, though his sentiments are not surprising. The pope is above such parts of canon law, no one else is. It’s not so much that he ignores them, as they don’t apply and as Pope he can do what he likes in such areas. But again, it is not surprising that some - mainly those who are ignoring canon law already - would see this as an excuse to ignore those parts of cannon law they do not like, which is annoying. A reform of cannon law might be a good thing, but it won’t happen if people just stop paying attention to it.

However, while this is not surprising, it does not show bad intent on the part of the Pope, but rather on those who decide they can ignore the laws that do apply to them because the Pope occasionally does not act as though he is bound by the laws that he is not bound by.

Bah. People who don’t understand the Church or Church teaching or what the Pope can or would do, or “love and inclusion” for that matter. And haven’t looked at his history. This won’t be an issue.
From numerous people who want women priests:

As above.

What’s happening is that people are seeing that Pope Francis is a kind man, and they tend to think that they are kind people and that any kind person will think like they do because everything they want is just to be nice, and so they are projecting their desires onto the Pope. Because Francis has not had the sort of office where he repeatedly gets up the noses of the gay marriage/women priests crowd that, say, Benedict has had, many of these people know little about what they think of as merely his positions, and so in their minds he is a blank slate. And they write on that blank slate whatever they want to.

I imagine their own projections will start getting overwritten by the truth soon enough, and when it does we’ll see lots of articles, over at the National “Catholic” Reporter probably, talking about how everyone had so much hope that Francis would “modernize” the Church’s doctrine, but they’re all disappointed that he caved to the establishment, or some such nonsense.

These sentiments also sound like the slippery, deceiving words of the evil one, to me.
A tactic similar to those put forward by Saul Alinsky. Talk and act as if you know that such and such a lie is actually true, and people will believe you, and you will be able to accomplish more damage.
Alinsky’s “Rules for Radicals”…the Canon Law for those who wish to achieve their own ends through deceit.

Certainly people are saying these things. They also tried to convince us that Pope Benedict was pro-condom. The best answer is to simply love the Church, love those who misunderstand the Church, and try to educate them when possible and pray for them always.

True, but I doubt if there is really that much “misunderstanding”. The teachings of Christ through His church are very clear on these matters.

As for Pope Francis supporting gay marriage…that is patently absurd. **And women priests…perhaps some day but I doubt very much this is the time. **The Church is in crisis around the world. I think we need a stable hand at the helm.
I simply do not understand why Catholics continue to bat this issue around. Ordinatio Sacerdotalis is an infallible teaching that states only men can be ordained and this is to be definitely held by all the faithful belonging to the Deposit of Faith - the Church does not have any authority to ordain women.

Sorry - CASE CLOSED!

Nope, not at all. I have heard our priest talk about confession and quote some of the Holy Father’s recent words.

We are having all-night Adoration on Friday in thanksgiving for Pope Francis and none of the materials given out mention women-priests, women foot-washing, or women-only marriages. 😉

I thank God every day for our wonderful priests and bishop! And always for our Pope!

“Have any of you experienced this? What is going on?”

In respect to the OP’s listed speculations, NO, I don’t see it that way.

What I do see is a hostile secular press, that btw doesn’t represent me or mine, attempt an Orwellian ‘newspeak’-like spin that perverts the Popes actions and words to justify all their endorsed abominations.

👍 Exactly!

As I said earlier, many Catholics do not accept the idea that there is a difference between doctrine and discipline. And even if they do accept that there is a difference they don’t agree about which is what.

“Uber-Traditionalists” tend to mistake discipline for dogma.
Those of a more “progressive” bent tend to mistake dogma for discipline.

If God wills it, it will be. Regardless of what the Pope thinks about dogma or discipline.

He got a dispensation for himself so he could wash the women’s feet. He also had one as Archbishop of Buenos Aires. So it stays the same for the rest of us.

They have no idea how the Catholic Church works.

I’ve heard the last one implied, but there are equal rights for women. 'Nuff said.

I guess my opinion on this matter is this. Even though the Pope can do what he wants, his message thus far has not implied one of putting himself above others. He doesn’t seem like the type of man who would hold his priests accountable to a law he excuses himself from. That is not ‘humility’, and he is a humble man.

So, I can see why some priests may interpret it they way they do. Given that, I don’t think he realized - or perhaps did and didn’t think it important - that his actions would have huge the ramifications we are beginning to see.

My prediction - and fear - is if Pope Francis does not come out fairly soon and teach, evangelize, in the context of Church teaching, and stressing the need to be faithful to the Church and articulate his stance clearly on what are the ‘obvious’ issues of gay marriage, women priests, following the GIRM, etc., to most of us, we will see a “Spirit of Francis” ushered in, where people apply their own interpretations to his actions and words, just as we saw with the “Spirit of Vatican II” fiasco.

No, but it’s further evidence that heretics, and other enemies of the Church are inside the wire - shaking your hand at the sign of peace. * 'Good to know.*

This is what a Catholic woman of theology advocates:

And she has been saying things like that for years. It is nothing new. And the parts of her message that are true - about dignity for every person - have always been true. And the parts that are false - that dignity is related to the position you hold - have always been false.

Certainly everyone takes the events of the day and tries to see how they will advance the cause. But those trying to advance a fundementally flawed issue will ultimately fail. The Church doesn’t need to organize itself around those agendas!

Time will tell, the handwriting on the wall.

i really dont like the way people are hyping up about his humility…this can lead to a big feeling of dissappointment later…
