Is anyone else trying Latin?

My father taught me the Rosary prayers in Latin. I must admit, I let them get very rusty, but picked them up again when my son was born 6 years ago.

I have since had 2 other children and a 4th on the way. The ‘Ave Maria’ is still part of our evening prayers. The Latin is just too much of a gift to the Church to be lost.

Here’s my now 6 year old son when he was 4

raises hand

It’s good. I just don’t study as much as I should.

I also have a couple of old school texts–Using Latin and Jenney’s First Year Latin.

Yes. It is a fine book.

One feature that took a bit of geting used to, but I’ve now come to value, is its arrangment of vocabulary according to roots rather than strictly alphabetically. Eg under the entry for *duco, ducere, duxi, ductus * (to lead) you will also find its compounds educo, induco, *perduco * and seduco (and you *won’t * find them alphabetically). This has been a real vocabulary strengthener for me.

I love this thread! I got a texbook from a seminarian after he dropped out a year ago and I tried to teach myself Latin. I sort of let it drop after not too long because studying a language by yourself takes some serious self-motivation that I didn’t have, but maybe I’ll get back into it.
I also love the ideas of learning our prayers in Latin. I’ll start doing that asap if someone can help me locate them in Latin.
Does anyone find the Navarre bible helpful for the English and Latin together?

I say the Rosary in Latin with John Paul ll each morning as I drive to church for the Mass. He leads, I respond. Sets the tone for the whole day. :yup: The little I remember of high school Latin allows me to understand as he announces the mysteries. I’m learning.

The Treasury of Latin Prayers is a great site.

I have recommended in other threads the LatinStudy email list for cooperative study. Their primary text is Wheelock, but I am participating with a group working through *Collins * (just turned in unit 20 – don’t know that I would recommend trying to jump in there)
