If so, what type of fast are you doing? If you are fasting, do you think it is wrong to eat a very small snack after working out if you can’t do your workout right before a mealtime?

i did last year,

bagel for breakfast

apple, carrots, and water for lunch

normal dinner.

i only snacked i think 3 or 4 days out of the 40. It was towards the end of Lent, and i was starving. It was a good experience, especially to prove how big of a sacrifice i could make, but it wasnt something i was going to do every year

as far as a snack after working out, keep in mind that your health comes before your fasting. Plus, you set your own fasting rules, so if you need a snack after working out, allow yourself one

never mind what I think is wrong or right, or what I am doing for Lent. what would be the best way for you to fast is the question to ask yourself. we can follow the traditional fasting practice of the Church, and do as the Rule of St. Benedict suggests for the monks, allow a bit of extra food for those doing manual labor or work in the fields, and allow something when exercise calls for more food. unless we have guidance from a spiritual director we should not be trying extreme penances outside the Church’s tradition

This is why I didn’t work out on Ash Wednesday. Not that I used Ash Wednesday as an excuse, I just had to choose - do I keep the fast the way I would prefer to, or work out and have to eat (which I absolutely would have to have done, or pass out). So I decided that the fast was more important for that day and didn’t work out. Had I chosen the other way, I would have made sure I had something to eat so my body was not suffering just because I wanted to work out AND fast.

You have to be realistic - if your body is telling you it’s not well, then eat. If it’s only hungry, that’s a good reminder to pray. 🙂

@@@ As prescribed by the Church. One meal a day, and one or two smaller snacks. Plenty of liquids. My cats eat better then I do.

@@@ Nope. You have that allowance of two small snacks. And even if you don’t…opinion time…our bodies are Temples of the Holy Spirit. Fasting to feel hungry is OK. Fasting to the point of physical damage or impaired thinking is a no-no.

Thanks Liza! I am struggling with myself over fasting, since I’m used to snacking while I study. But I know I’ve also been avoiding prayer… I think that if I prayed AND fasted it would work a lot better.
