Hello, folks. I am inquiring to see if any member here is pursuing a vocation with the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest?

I am discerning a vocation to the Holy Priesthood and the charism and modus-operandi of the ICRSS looks quite appealing. Might anyone here who is currently in formation with them (or know of someone who is) be able to answer a few questions in regard to the Institute?

Thank you kindly, gents.

Deo gratias! I’ll keep you in my prayers as you discern your vocation. 🙂

I’m very happy to be at one of their oratories. Just a mom, not a priest. 🙂

Just a Catholic mom? … Why they are the very fuel of families (and vocations)! Thank you kindly for your prayers, ma’am.

I’ve never been able to attend one of their oratories as there isn’t a single one in all of Texas! The audacity! 😃

What has been your impression of the Priests of ICRSS and the manner in which they lead and nourish a parish? Are they solidly traditional?

Thank you again, ma’am, for your prayers!

Hello SL,
I have no idea. I do know I’m joining the Catholic faithful though. I’m going to Our Lady’s Maronite parish in Austin, Texas. I’m not a Catholic yet but I hope to be soon. As for the ICRSS I don’t know of any but I just found out St. Mary’s in Austin does a Latin Mass at 3:30 PM on Sundays. I plan to attend that this Sunday because Latin has always interested me (I took 3 years of it in highschool). 🙂 if that is the Tradition you are trying to become a member of you may find what your looking for there. If they don’t have it perhaps they can point you in the right direction. One thing is for certain. If you truly desire to be an ICRSS priest you may have to travel. So ask yourself, are you willing to make the sacrifice in order to spread the good word? I know for me though I’m currently not called I know I’d want to attend a maronite seminary; and there are only 2 in the whole US. So think long but choose wisely for something tells me you may have less choices than I do.

definitely explore their site if you have not already:

And, if I were you, I would email someone on one of the ICRSS’s websites. It might be especially helpful to write to perhaps a priest at one of the parishes in America… some of the priests are recently ordained as the ICRSS is not very old, and they would remember the days of being at the seminary and be able to answer your questions better than I probably could.

Nice website I can see why the op is drawn towards that order.

In my limited experience, the priests of the Institute are solidly traditional. I have never been a regularly attending member of their parish though, since the nearest parish is three hours away and I only go there when I am visiting relatives.

I pray that you have a true vocation to the Holy Priesthood. But you will have to learn French!

(Personally, I am more drawn to the Society of Saint Pius X)

They are very traditional. I consider them the Delta Force of priests. Really know their stuff. The oratory I attend is the first Catholic Church where I have heard sermons on Hell, abortion etc. Our priest knows a great deal about the Mass and its history and frequently give conferences on this and many other topics. I initially wanted to record these good sermons and put them on the internet but had to stop since, unfortunately, some of this authentic Catholic teaching would be controversial in our diocese.

They currently have run out of space at their Seminary so we are hosting a couple of their “upper class men” to make room for the new arrivals.

Good group and we are very happy with their priest.

I do not know if it helps with anything, but this is what I wrote in another discussion about the differences between the FSSP and ICRSS (I don’t know if the info on the ICRSS will help or not… but here it is):

"The FSSP are closer to diocesan priests… they are in many different dioceses, but the bishops in those dioceses don’t have much authority over them… they are a Society of Apostolic Life of Pontifical Right, so they only have to answer to the Pope pretty much, but they do have a Superior General and whatnot. They do not take religious vows as they are not a religious order. They do however have a group of Discalced Carmelite nuns somewhat attached to them… an FSSP priest is their chaplain in PA. They do not seem to own very many of their own parishes, they are usually welcomed by a bishop to take over a parish that would be dedicated to the FSSP, but the parishes they receive are not usually the most ideal, they have to work with what they get… I guess the better way to put it is to say that they receive the poorer parish buildings and whatnot, but they do a great job with connecting with the people, teaching classes on the Latin language, teaching apologetic, etc. They were founded when some SSPX priests left the SSPX because the SSPX bishop ordained some priests to the episcopate without papal approval, thus excommunicating the society… these SSPX priests ran to the Holy See for aid… Pope John Paul II saw that they were sincere in wanting to avoid excommunication and so not to be in disobedience of the Holy Father, so the Holy Father helped get the FSSP going. The FSSP has two seminaries, one in Wigratzbad, Germany (for German, French, and Italian speakers), and one in Denton, Nebraska, USA (for the English speakers). Their charism is titled “traditional” fssp.org/index.htm and fssp.com/

The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest seems a bit closer to a Canons Regular or a religious order (I hear that there was talk of them becoming a religious order, but I have no confirmation on this), but they are still similar to diocesan priests. They are in fewer dioceses, but they are a bit newer, but the bishops in those dioceses don’t have much authority over them… they are a Society of Apostolic Life of Pontifical Right, so they only have to answer to the Pope pretty much, but they do have a Prior General and whatnot. They do not take religious vows as they are not a religious order. However, they do have an order of sisters: “Adorers of the Royal Heart of Jesus”. They are welcomed into various diocese, yet fewer dioceses in around the world… and their parishes are a bit nicer. They were founded in Africa and brought over to Italy because many people had a traditional charism. They do have parishes in the U.S., but their only seminary is in Gricigliano, Italy where you may have to speak French? However, they do have an oratory in America (St. Francis de Sales Oratory) in St. Louis, Missouri with a pre-seminary program. They also seem to have a sort of “habit” (usually blue or black)… similar to the blue habit of their sisters. They also seem to use more lace. institute-christ-king.org/ and institute-christ-king.org/stlouis/

I hope that helps.
Pax Domini tecum."

I might also add that they have different patrons… the FSSP def. has St. Peter and probably unofficially–Pope Pius X and such, while the ICRSS has St. Benedict, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. Francis de Sales.

Yes, you do have to know how to speak French. The seminary is in Italy, near Florence and it is very beautiful. They use the teachings of St. Francis de Sales and some others. In most cases I believe they have you spend a year as a candidate at one of the apostolates ( I am so sorry, I CANNOT spell that word!) All of the info is on line, as suggested previously. I am sure you can contact the seminary. From what I know it is very good.

I can help you with your French! 😛 It’s my mother tongue.

I know these priests, and I admire them a lot! They’re very traditionalist. 🙂

Very solidly traditional. I’m feeling spiritually replete and very happy for being at the Oratory. 🙂

How do they lead and nourish the parish? Hmm, well of course the Mass and Confession, Benediction monthly, Adoration weekly. the sacraments… They do have an evening Mass once a week. There’s a Mass for the moms with little ones once a week during the day which is nice for us… Stations of the Cross in lent on Fridays… Just everything you’d expect, the old way.

These priests like their feast days. There are lots of gatherings after the high Mass for pot lucks, that sort of thing. Coffee and doughnuts after Mass while the kids are in Sunday school. I will say that I think they do make an effort to speak to each person or family at these sorts of things.

I’ll quote somebody who goes by the screen name of “Dusty Bottoms” who said, " the FSSP is like the Church in the early 20th Century, the ICRSS the early 17th Century; if the Church were a high school, the FSSP priests would probably be football players, and the ICRSS chess players." --I’ve found this to be true. My own analogy would be that the FSSP are more like the country mouse and the ICK are a little more city mouse types. I don’t know if that makes sense to you. Both fraternities are great and we’re so lucky to have them.
