Actually, despite the difficulties of working with a nearly-unworkable religion (Islam), we seem do be doing pretty well with Iraq, now. Yes, there were major missteps. The country could have been a lot more stable and thus a lot stronger, keeping Iran in check, if we hadn’t entirely dismantled the government but had worked with it.
Iran has been largely mishandled, as well, but the political will unfortunately has not been there to deal with it. The initial strategy re: Iran is BRILLIANT: take out the threat in Iraq, replace with a friendly regime and military bases; take out Afghanistan on the other side and do the same: squeeze Iran, be prepared to invade from both sides and topple its regime in no time flat.
Like the early Roman Republic, the U.S. has a long history of doing something perhaps no other major power in the history of the world has done: show restraint, but defeat enemies when provoked, then turn them into allies and build them up. Time and time again. We fail only when we DON’T do that. And just like the early Roman Republic, this approach has created a far, far safer world with far less war. Yes there is abuse and mismanagement from time to time, but we are remarkable for how comparatively infrequently that happens, and how much we criticize ourselves for it when it does. Fact is, the
responsible use of power (yes, for the U.S. more than any other power in the history of the world, it
has been responsible), particularly when it comes to force,
does resolve problems, and
can and
has made a better world.
As WWII is the shining example (through terrible destruction came tremendous good, due primarily to the U.S.), American intervention can bring about great good in the end.
The unusual problem we face is that Islam throws a kink into this all, makes it harder. But I refuse to believe that we cannot work with Muslims. The alternative would be bin Laden’s world, where it’s us or them, and one has to kill or subjugate all the rest of the other.
No problem my brother. I would love it if we invaded Iran. It would tickle me pink. we are already here, lets topple another brutal regime! Hey, Id be in on that one. Two sounds I absolutely love. A Harley Davidson, and the sound of a .50 cal or 240 B. from my turret. I never get what I want though. Im more than likely just gonna go back to Hawaii.
Unfortunately, the time may come when that is necessary, my friend. I think we missed an opportunity to roll through on our liberation tour, but then again, the political will for the other wars was already stretched so thinly as to tie our hands. It certainly would have saved a lot of trouble. Iran was probably a better candidate for reform than Iraq. Then again, since we are stupidly unwilling to use the oil of those countries to pay for the war and rebuilding, we also would have been challenged to do what we needed to do afterwards: build Iran back up.
