People could practise safely their religion under Saddam. Now, they are being killed left and right. From Zenit yesterday:

Q: Since 2004 the Christians in Iraq have suffered a savage persecution including threats, kidnapping and death. What is the situation today in Iraq?

Archbishop Casmoussa: It is very bad today. We were hoping that two years ago things would improve because the situation in Baghdad and other cities have improved. In Mosul – this is the biggest city in the north of Iraq and is considered the country of Christians – the situation is very bad, with many kidnappings and killings. We have a feeling that we are not wanted in this city, though this has been our home and here you will find many churches and monasteries. There is so much history for us Christians here in Mosul and the surrounding areas of Mosul.

Q: There was a letter circulated on a daily news Web site by an extremist group, Ansar Al Islam: “The secretary general of the member’s Islamic brigade has decided to give the Christian Crusader infidels of Baghdad and the other provinces a last warning to leave Iraq immediately and permanently and join Benedict XVI and his followers who have trampled on the greatest symbols of humanity and Islam … There will be no place for the Christian infidels from now on … those who remain will have their throats slit as it is happening to the Christians in Mosul." Is this what Christians have to live with every day or is this an exception?

Archbishop Casmoussa: It is not an exception and it is not the first time that we’ve received messages like these. I have that message in Arabic. It is difficult to read those messages. Many people are not aware of these messages. But harder than these messages are the attacks against the lives of the people here. If we were strangers here in Iraq, then we would leave. But it is our historical land and historical country. We have nowhere else to go. This message is dangerous for the central and for the regional governments and for all the Iraqi people. We know that these extremists have no power but just use terror to intimidate, but there are many small groups like this that are a menace today – and today Christians, tomorrow Muslims.

Q: So the perpetrators of violence have not been judged for their crimes?

Archbishop Casmoussa: Yes. Because of fear – and this is a fact in Iraq.

Second, if you speak about military protection, in my opinion, it is not what we need. There is no peace after a war, destruction and death

I do have my facts straight as It isn’t me who wrote this article. What we are talking about are christians. And this archbishop declares that there is still unrest. and chaos, …AND HE LIVES THERE.

Saddam was a secular dictator…he could not tolerate muslim factions. Yes, he killed many shiites…but wasn’t Iran shiite?

A leading member of the revolutionary Ba’ath Party, which espoused a mix of Arab nationalism and Arab socialism, Saddam played a key role in the 1968 coup that brought the party to long-term power.

Here is the start of your post. you did not specify Christians. Ok, so you have an article. I have a very good friend who grew up here, long before the invasion. He is an Iraqi Catholic. He will tell you, they were persecuted long before Saddam fell. And not much was done about it. In fact, every time a Church is demolished here, a Mosque is built on top of it. there has always been an undercurrent of religious hatred here for Christians and Sabiens. who are even Fewer in number. They happen to be the spiritual descendants of John the Baptist, in case you are wondering. The only folks who had it half way decent. were the sunni muslims.

AND HE LIVES THERE.
So do I. there really is no chaos. murder yes. Sectarian violence. yes. We only had one day of severe protest and these were put down rather nicely by the Iraqi Army. It was Muslim firing on Muslim. I was there. I witnessed it.

Would it not be next to impossible to arrest someone like Osama considering his extremely violent and twisted nature?

Saddam was arrested and i would consider him very twisted and violent???

One has nothing to do with the other. Sorry, nice try. 🤷
well actually yes they do…everyone on here is happy that Bin Laden was killed, you yourself seem thrilled by his death, but in this country there’s abortionists who have ripped apart children in the thousands and people simply blow it off and say “lets pray about it”. It’s a great hypocrisy…

No problem my brother. I would love it if we invaded Iran. It would tickle me pink. we are already here, lets topple another brutal regime! Hey, Id be in on that one. Two sounds I absolutely love. A Harley Davidson, and the sound of a .50 cal or 240 B. from my turret. I never get what I want though. Im more than likely just gonna go back to Hawaii. 😦
attacking Iran would be the worst possible move…I think Iran would probably win

I suppose you could use that same logic with Charles Manson…which we did arrest!

Those muslims that were dancing in the street because of 9-11 or any other death of an american makes one speechless and numb.

Those americans who danced in the street when Osama was killed leaves one speechless and numb.

One is a christian country the other one is not. They acted the same. We humans are all the same…saddening…😊

You are right…we kill dictators who have burned, tore and beheaded people…yet…we do the same thing with babies, as the babies are trying to kcik their legs from such torture.

In the spiritual world, there is no difference…it is the same madness, except with babies, they are supposed to be safe in the womb. Nobody cares when we talk war.

Yes, hypocrisy.👍

Thank you for your kindness…there are none so blind whoo do not want to see. I will retire from this thread. This is nationalism at its purest.

Why are people so quick to allege that others are “filled” with “hate and anger?”

The Catechism states, “The prohibition for murder does not abrogate the right to render an unjust aggressor unable to inflict harm.”

Saddam and Osama bin Laden were two people who fit the bill for that statement if anyone ever did. Both of them would never have stopped harming people. I don’t go around shouting “USA!” at the thought of their deaths, but I do think it was neccessary. I prayed for their souls, but I am confident in our Lord’s justice- whatever that judgement has turned out to be.

^^ the same could be said about abortionists…perhaps we should just “pray about it”

What did you read that you interpreted as “hate and anger?” And how can you know someone’s heart to see if theirs is “filled” with it?

Remove the beam from thine own eye…

This sounds to me like its part of the problem with the rhetoric of our age. People are too quick to call others hatemongers, racists, etc. That is where the prejudice and hatred lies, because how else can you be so quick to judge if you are not pre-judging (without sufficient knowledge) based on some pre-determined assessment of an individual?

I hope you’re not part of that.
