There is a possibility that we will be sending our daughter there in the Fall. Do you know anything about the residence called Newman Hall? It’s supposed to be Catholic. How Catholic is it?

It’s actually affiliated with Newman Club, a Catholic college organization. Here’s a link to the Newman Center’s website: sjcnc.org/

I was a member of the Newman Club at my college, and it was a great opportunity for me! I was able to connect with other Catholics on campus that I may have otherwise never known, and the discussions we had were geared toward Catholic young adults.

Not only that, but it’s amazing what great things can be done in a community when you get a bunch of college kids together! 😃

It’s a wonderful place! I worked there for a while after school, and my DH and I got married in St. John’s Chapel in 2002. If you check out their website, (posted above) you will see that the architecture of the Chapel is absolutely breathtaking! And they have daily Mass, and I think daily confessions. They have lots of spiritual /service opportunities, and a really really good faith-filled community. At a big school like UIUC it’s really easy to find bad friends, but at SJCNC/Newman Hall your daughter will be able to find GOOD friends much easier, IMO.

If it is necessary b/c of finances or b/c of the better opportunities to attend a huge school like UIUC, I def. think that a place like Newman Hall makes the potential spiritual pitfalls of a “typical” freshman experience much much less.

👍

ETA: It is definitely Catholic with a capital C. 😃 AFAIK, allowing for the occasional misguided person (there’s always someone, yaknow? 😉 ), SJCNC tries to stay absolutely faithful to the Magisterium.

Thank you for your replies. If she goes to U of I, that’s where I want her to stay.
