Is applauding in church okay?

usually after Mass, during anouncements, sometimes in recognizing those who just received first Holy Communion the lector or Priest will ask for a round of applause…I find this extremely out of place…could you please comment on this and kindly explain if it is inappropriate…I read or heard somewhere that orders from Rome was this was a no no…tks
