Is applause appropriate after a Nuptial Mass?

Hello,

Is it appropriate to announce the new Mr. and Mrs John Doe after the Mass has ended at a Catholic wedding…followed by applause?? Please reference any current official Catholic opinion if possible…The father of the groom insisted on no applause after my son and daughter and law were married, citing a statement made by Cardinal Benedict that applause was not appropriate.
