Is arguing with parents about which clothes fit a mortal sin?

Just wondering, I’m going to Mass soon. The argument pretty much consisted of:

Parent: Those need to be chucked out they don’t fit
Me: Yes they do
Parent: No they don’t
  • Voices start to raise, annoyance starts to set in -
    Me: Yes, they do
Parent: No they don’t, they look ridiculous and tiny.
Me: No they don’t! They fit and everyone says they look fine.
Parent: We’re not having both sizes, simple as that.
    Me: walks away
Thanks.

This is typical growing up stress. If your parents think it is too tight, it might be worth your while to casually ask your parents what problems they have with it. I don’t know what pieces of clothing your parents were arguing about so I can’t give a precise answer, but the clothing style (at least up here) seems to be tight and revealing. Your parents might be a bit worried that you are showing a bit too much skin. Christians are taught it’s important to dress pretty but not revealing. For example tights are the rage right now, but as comfortable as they are, (I own a pair) they are best worn under a long shirt, sweater, shorts or a short dress dress. I personally hate it when I see them worn like a pair of jeans. Style and modesty is a delicate balance that is hard to achieve. Thank God for camisoles.

Once you know their answers, you can decide what to do. You can always come back to the forum and ask more questions. You have an interesting bunch of people here who will gladly help you. If you are feeling bad in how you behaved, you can always apologize to your parents. It’s important to talk things out with them. They are your parents and if they are worried it is because they care and they love you.

Well, If you’re in doubt that you have committed grave sin then you’re not in grave sin. I don’t know your circumstances, but if you weren’t in doubt why would you be asking about it? Now that applies to this specific case.

Arguing with your parents is not something you should be doing, but which situation is serious or not in itself is decided by a prudent conscience, talk with someone you think you can trust.

The example you have given above hardly constitute a sin. Keep in mind though that your taste in clothes and that of your mom is bound to be worlds apart and the two of you would not see eye to eye on that subject. Out of respect for her, you could patiently listen to her and if possible change to something she is more likely to approve. Try not to walk away from her; it is like you are turning your back on her, ignoring her.

“Honor you father and mother”

Respect your parents wishes, respect God by dressing to impress him and respect your fellow people who have to look at you dressed inappropriately in their God’s house.

You don’t look good when you dress sloppily or relaxed. You embarrass yourself by doing that.

If you are trying to dress so you can invite a person to sleep with you then you have no place being in God’s house you should go somewhere else to do that.

Go back to church when your mind is out of the gutter and on God.

Thanks, although I just want to tell you I am male and it was about dress shirts :p.

Indeed: modesty isn’t just for women, and there are a lot of women who are visually oriented and who aren’t above checking out a nice-looking guy (same goes for SSA men). I’m one of those gals, and I see a lot of guys dressing in ways that make me want to gag. Wearing too short shorts? Eurgh, no thanks: women do not want to see your goods. Going shirtless, unless you;re a ditchdigger working on a hot day? In some cases, it can incite people to lust, and in other cases, it can incite them to run to that form of Gnosticism that regard the body as a necessary evil at best. Wearing baggy pants that show your underwear, or pants slung so low that your rump crease is visible? Oyy, don’t get me started…

What the fellow said applies to males as well. Dressing to show off your body in church doesn’t just happen with women in our society. Church is about being with God, not about attracting attention to yourself.

If they were pulling at the buttons and straining at any part…they are too small. Despite what your friends may tell you, they are not attractive when too tight.

Here is a fashion Don’t:

Way too tight:

Can we say FREAKISHLY over the top response? Just because someone thinks his clothes fit, but perhaps he should bump up one size does NOT mean he is wanting to invite someone to sleep with him or he has his mind in the gutter. Maybe he just likes that particular shirt?

I think YOU should ponder why YOUR mind automatically went there?

To the OP - Listen to your Mother. We are always right. 😉

With all the spandex added to dress clothes now so that they can fit more closely without being tight, it’s possible that your parents think they are too small because they would be too small without that bit of stretch. Perhaps you could put the shirt(s) on and demonstrate for your parents that you can indeed move freely without being immodest. And if you can’t, well, then you also have your answer 🙂

It’s not a sin at all to disagree with your parents, if you are being respectful while doing it.
