Is Attending Mass on Saturday "as good as" Going on Sunday

Excuse the novice question, but I’m really new at this.

In the Church’s view, may I choose to attend mass either on Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning, or is Saturday only an alternative if I have a valid reason to miss mass on Sunday?

The Saturday Vigil Mass is equally valid for your Sunday obligation and there is no stipulation that you must have a “reason” to go to Saturday Vigil rather than Sunday morning/evening Mass.
 
Yes, as far as I know it’s just another option for celebrating the Sunday Liturgy. It’s the same readings and fulfills the Sunday obligation.

Some background, my priest exclained that it originates from an old Jewish custom where the day ends at nightfall, so technically, nightfall is the start of the next day.
They carried this tradition over into the Sunday obligation to allow for people who work Sundays i.e. shift work and such, to go to Mass and still fulfill the obligation.

In addition, the Saturday evening Liturgy of the Hours, the other official liturgy of the Church, is the first part of the Sunday Liturgy of the Hours; the one on Sunday evening is the second. So it is not just Saturday evening Mass which is the Sunday Mass; the Saturday evening Vespers is also the Sunday (first) Vespers.

Saturday afternoon might too early. In our church it is the 6pm Mass on Saturday which fulfills our Sunday obligation.
 
I go on Saturday evening. I’d go on Sunday, but the choir then is a terrible happy clappy guitar group that drives me up the wall.

The Sunday obligation may be fulfilled at 4:00 pm or later.
