Is Baptism by immersion the only valid one?

I have been told that u truly are not baptized unless you were immersed in water. Now most of the time in scripture it does talk about being baptized in a river etc. it does not specify at penticost when thousands were baptized if it was this way. I can see where scripture supports this but it also does not say it has to be a river. You must be baptized with water and the spirit. What is correct?
