is being a lingerie model a sin?

A friend just signed a contract to be a lingerie model. When I approached her with the idea of enabling men to sin with her half naked pictures, she quickly said that she is not responsible for anyone’s sins. Isn’t there something to be said for modesty? Is a porn star not somewhat responsible for a man masturbating to her video and/or pictures? How is being mostly nude in suggestive photos any different?

Is there anything that you can share from the Catechism or the bible that I can share with her?

Thanks!

Lingerie magazines are intended for women to pick out something to wear. They are not porn. They can be used as porn, but that is not what they are intended for.

Really, though, my main question to you would be this: what MAN is going to use a lingerie mag as pornography? Pornography is free on the internet and it’s much better (more exciting) than a lingerie mag, and most people in the West seem to have easy access to the internet. Not to mention actual porn mags, etc.

I appreciate your concern for your friend but perhaps this is a bit of an exaggeration?

^I disagree.

Listen to Leah Darrow’s talks. She was down a similar path, photo shoots and all and it did not go well.

Does anyone think Jesus would actually look at that and be proud?

Mostly with regard to vanity, which could be said about any sort of model showing off superficially pretty clothing which people will feel good about themselves for wearing. IMO.

I tend towards agreeing with the vanity point, however if I step outside on any Friday or Saturday evening I would see young women - with young men - wearing as ‘day wear’ little more than the lingerie that is likely to be included in this catalogue.

I think the sensibilities and fashions of the world have moved on from viewing a lingerie catalogue as de-facto pornography.

Remember, in the Victorian days, men would go crazy at the sight of a lady’s ankle. We are accustomed to seeing more flesh these days and the standards of ‘modesty’ move with fashion.

While that isn’t necessarily a good thing (since pornography would also tend towards more extreme depictions of depravity as a result) it does mean that the results of viewing the lingerie pictures are unlikely to be anything to write home about. Men seeking lustful thrills would be extremely unlikely to use the catalogue in such a way.

All that being said, if I were you I would very strongly caution your friend to be extremely careful in her dealings with the people who take the pictures and to protect her own individual modesty at all times - i.e. she should not change into and out of such clothing in sight of other people and she should be aware that the people, particularly men, who take such photos may themselves have additional less savoury motives for doing so. I would strongly urge that she should be chaperoned at all times.

Your friend is swimming in dangerous waters with this one. Causing a Scandal i.e. someone else to sin by the way we act, dress etc…, is a sin, causing an Active Scandal is a mortal sin.

In my humble opinion, lingerie catalogues should just display the articles of clothing (no human model is involved). That would prevent the action of sinfully fantasizing someone wearing the lingerie depicted in the catalogues.

I think this is a question that your friend needs to answer for herself. But your thread question reminded me of something I read. A former Victoria’s Secret Model quit her career as she grew in her Christian faith. You might like reading it to offer you hope if you are worried about your friend, and you may want to share this story with her.
lifesitenews.com/news/former-lingerie-model-abandons-victoria-secret-career-vows-to-honor-husband/
Growing in my relationship with the Lord, and my faith, I’m a strong believing Christian, I just became so convicted about wanting to honor my husband with my body and wanting to be a role model for other women out there who look up to me,” she said…
after two years working for the notorious lingerie company, a comment from her eight-year-old cousin sparked a dramatic turn-around. …
Now, Bisutti is using the unexpected flood of media attention to encourage young women to reject some of the false messages that she fears she was sending in her previous line of work. Beauty is “a heart issue,” rather than an “outer issue,” she says.
“I didn’t really want to be that kind of role model for younger girls because I had a lot of younger Christian girls that were looking up to me and then thinking that it was okay for them to walk around and show their bodies in lingerie to guys,”

To do something which tempts/leads someone else into sin is what the Church calls the sin on scandal. Jesus has some pretty strong words regarding the sin of scandal when he says “Temptations to sin are sure to come; but woe to him by whom they come! It would be better for him if a millstone were hung round his neck and he were cast into the sea, than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin." (Luke 17:1-2)

I saw a comment from someone that women look at lingerie models, not men, but that unfortunately is not true. Men are “famous” for looking through their wife’s /girlfriend’s Victoria’s Secret catalogs and the sort.

When a woman gets an offer like your friend has gotten I’m sure it must be very difficult to turn down. But the Church considers such activity a sin of grave matter.
