Is being gay a sin? And if it is do you need to confess it in confession? If you do how are you suppose to confess it and what do you say?

Being gay is not a sin, but having sex outside of a marriage between a man and a woman is a sin. Just tell the priest if this sin has occurred and approximately how many times.

Homosexuality is not a sin.

Sexual acts outside of a valid marriage are sins, including masturbation, and you confess those by saying “Father, I am single or married and I have sinned against chastity X times (you can approximate if you don’t know, say 'approximately X times per day/week/month for Y period of time)”

It isn’t required to specify what kind of “sin against chastity?”

Your priest will ask for any more details if he needs them.

The kind of sin is “against chastity”. Your priest will ask for details, including station in life, if he needs this information.

@Flopfoot, I know that you push this agenda anytime you have the opportunity, but for the record (again) , people do not choose to be gay. FYI.

Attractions to the same sex, while disordered and pointing in a direction that is outside of the purpose of sexual relations, is not in itself sinful, and hence would not need to be confessed. I have read or heard that confessing temptations can be done, so if true and if you want to, you can mention any struggles in this area. But that is very optional.
Having homosexual relations would be sinful, and would need to be confessed.

Any sexual activity (with self and others) outside of married life and open to life is sinful, and would need to be confessed prior to taking of the Eucharist, which we need to be in the state of Grace to receive.

One thing that may he important is to realize is that YOU are not your attractions. Hence I’d refrain from seriously calling you “gay”. I advise to not focus on it too much as though it were an identity or defined who you are. Do face any problems or issues you have with truth, honesty, and loyalty to God. God bless.

While nobody knows definitively why some people are gay or bisexual, what we do know is that nobody seems to choose it. People just seem to be that way.

This is one reason the term “gay” is so problematic. In a sense some people really do choose to be gay, in the common parlance. I.e., self-proclaimed bisexuals who seek out same sex partners, people who “experiment”, etc. However, in another sense, it does not seem to be chosen by many people to have same sex attraction. It’s like the term “gay” was designed to cause confusion.

I figured the implication of that post was basically “since you don’t choose it, then being gay (in the sense of experiencing same sex attraction) is not a sin”.

I’m sure that scientific understanding of the processes behind involuntary ejaculation has come on since Aquinas’s day. After all, until the 20th century it was fairly common for children to be beaten for bed-wetting (in England at any rate). We now realise that they have no control over it and don’t do this. Orwell eventually concluded that since he was regularly beaten for something over which he had no control he must somehow be inherently bad.

Indeed, but they also knew it was not voluntarily chosen (in at least some cases).
The concern isn’t an issue of voluntary vs involuntary, but the fact of grave matter inherent to the act. Clearly it isn’t mortal sin when you don’t have control over it, but the distinction was being made between mortal vs venial.

You mean some people choose to engage in same-sex activity. I don’t think anybody chooses to feel the attraction. There is now a recognised category known as MSM - men who have sex with men - which refers in part, at least, to men who choose to have sex with men despite having no real attraction, e.g. because it’s easier to find a willing and available partner that way. But that isn’t choosing to be gay; it’s just choosing same-sex activity.

1862: One commits venial sin when, in a less serious matter, he does not observe the standard prescribed by the moral law, or when he disobeys the moral law in a grave matter, but without full knowledge or without complete consent.

It’s hard to see how an entirely involuntary ejaculation can even be considered a venial sin. It’s just a thing that happens.

It depends what you mean by “gay”. That’s one of the issues: it can mean one who has attraction to the same sex yet doesn’t act on it and someone who actively lives a certain lifestyle.
I’d agree that it’s not a choice (at least not in the common sense) to have attraction for most (I’ve seen things…no, you don’t wanna know).

No, I just think it’s Catholics/Christians confusing themselves by adding another meaning to it.

If you say you’re gay to the secular public, people will think you’re attracted to the same sex. They may think you’re sexually active as well, but that’s because they assume that for everyone…including straight people unless they say otherwise.
