Is Birth Control allowed for medical uses?

I am a Catholic 44 year old married woman. My doctor has prescribed birth control/hormone pills to help me with my excessive bleeding and re-occurring anemia problem. I asked my parish priest in confession about this and he said it was something that would need further discussion with my husband and a priest. I am confused about it all. Should I not have marital relations while on these pills? Should I not take them if it’s not life threating? Thanks.
