Is Bono (U2) Pro-Life?

Put me down as another who is disappointed in Bono supporting Obama. I usually don’t care about the political or religious views of musicians but when they are Christian and should know better I am much more affected by them.

That is definetly the concensus in Ireland, especially after U2 shipped out after they had to start paying tax on anything over E250,000!!! They’d shout at the government to support aid work over seas, as long as they weren’t paying tax that the government could then spend there or at home for that matter.

I don’t think he’s come out one one side of the fence or the other, he’s just sitting on the fence not to upset fans either way. (Read into that what you will:blush:) But generally, people in Ireland have a very low opinion of Bonos self-aggrandising political activism.

PS loved your earlier rebuttle of him growing up in ‘the troubles’

Many famous people hide their principles. If the higher-ups don’t like their politics, then they don’t get another gig. It’s a shame how they prostitute themselves. You couldn’t pay me enough to be that spineless.

Careful. I seem to recall a Pharisee who thanked God that he was not like the other sinners.

(Cont’d) …Not that you’re necessarily acting pharisaical, per se. That last line almost sounds like boasting though.

(Sorry for the double post- I’ll stop now)

I never said I was perfect. Far from it. But too many people are willing to ignore their Church values for the sake of being entertained.

Do you honestly believe that the Madonna and Britney Spears kiss on stage wasn’t planned??? Do you honestly believe that it was a true moment of affection that just “happened” to be on the center stage of a major TV production??? Too many of them are prostitutes who have sold out their values at the direction of the unelected media puppetmasters. Anyone who does so is a whore.

Hi there!

I’m from Croatia so I apologize for my grammar, spelling, etc.

I strongly suggest comapison of lyric from the new song of Bono ( who mostly writes the lyrics) called Magnificet with Luke 2 chapter. I want to highlight a word womb:

From the womb my first cry, it was a joyful noise.

Every member of U2 is (imho) strong individual so talking about U2 and their party line would be stupid because Larry never supported Bono in his charity work because I belive he though that this is not in descripiton of the rock’s star behaviour. Bono is human being, and he is born in mixed marriage, and he mother died. His father has never spoken about her. In this case you took what your parents give you, and frankly most of us inheritated their religion from our parents. So I wonder what whoukd I do? Btw. The meaning of the word catholis is Universal and that’s the opposite from narrowminded. We’re good catholics by our deeds not our word. Coclusion: Bono lives with his same wife and has a four children. He is with the same woman from when he was 16? Isn’t that catholic ideal, or not? And one more thing - The person can not be in such inner divide and hide it for so long. I strongly suggest the other pro life song - Miracle drug. It’s a song about mother who refused to shut the machines over her paralyzed son, and she was coming to the hospital every day to read him for 12 years. after 12 years doctors discovered that his paralysis is curable. They gave him a drug, and when his numbness dissapeared he was able to talk instantly because of his mother who’ve never lost her hope. His name is Christopher Nolan and he is famous Irish novelist. Is that pro life?
One more thing - Don’t forget that Bono is only… a rockstar!

I disagree with most of their political stances, but I still love SOME of their music. Particularly the early work. Not so much the later work. Though I DO love “Stuck in a Moment.”

I plan to have “Where the Streets Have No Name” sung at my funeral. Also, MAYBE “With or Without You.” 😃

I AM disappointed that he has bought into the lie that “Barry” is basically a second version of Christ. Oh, well…still a great artist.

Listen to how off-key he sounds when he’s doing something non-rock. Not to mention the arrogance of changing the words to the Ave Maria – yeah, I guess St. Dominic’s prayer could really be improved, yeah Bono?
I would argue that Bono didn’t change the words to “Ave Maria”, he changed the words to Schubert’s “Ellens dritter Gesang”, which is commonly used as a setting for the “Ave Maria.” Considering that tune’s original use was as the setting for lyrics that referenced the “Ave Maria” and not as a setting specifically for the “Ave Maria,” I don’t think he committed the offense you claim he did.

**Sorry Stratus… 😦
Lets go listen to some Ted Nugent and Toby Keith together, buddy. 🙂 **
After reading Ted Nugent’s article on Sarah Palin he wrote for Time Magazine I wanted to go out and buy all of his albums to give him some money. And you gotta love Toby Keith’s “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue.”

Anyways, I love U2’s music. Some of their songs are spiritual and I think it’s great. Their definitely one of the greatest bands out there today. I don’t like Bono (South Park had an episode devoted to insulting him) but I like his music. I’m more of an The Edge guy. Great guitarist.

I had tickets to go see U2 in concert over the summer and was super excited because it was going to be my first ever concert. Then Bono hurt himself practicing and ended up postponing my city till next summer. What go me mad was that around the same time, Bret Michaels almost died and was in a coma for weeks yet went on performing a week after he woke up.

Therefore, I now like Bret Michaels more than Bono. Bono’s a sissy.

I agree with you about Bret Michaels.

He’s needlessly endangering his life by refusing to follow doctor’s orders and not “taking it easy,” but I guess that’s how Bret rocks.

I’ll give him this much—the man is possessed of a serious pair of “Big Ones,” if you know what I mean. 😃

For those of you who like Latin rock ever heard of Chile’s La Ley? I’m pretty sure the singer Beto Cuevas isn’t Catholic (I think he’s a Buddhist) but I’ve actually heard him make statements indicating he thinks abortion is bad. Here’s an audio of him singing in English.

Here’s an except of an old interview where Bono explains his position on the issue:
Mother Jones: U2 doesn’t seem to tackle the kind of politics that might truly trouble or alienate their fans. In the film you go on about apartheid and then ask, “Am I bugging you?” just about everyone in the US is opposed to apartheid. Yet you never speak out on issues like abortion, Israel and the Palestinians, the death penalty, AIDS, gay rights. Let’s talk about some of those. How do you feel, for instance, about abortion?
Bono: I just have my own ideas. I believe that it’s a woman’s right to choose. Absolutely.
Mother Jones: Have you ever talked about that in concert? Or in any context?
Bono: No.
Mother Jones: And that is the kind of thing that might alienate some fans…
Bono: If I had been inspired to write a song about it, they would get it in the eyes, just like [supporters of apartheid] do on “Silver and Gold.” I will admit that we are attracted to issues that unify people rather than divide them.

I used to be a big U2 fan when I was young. As I got older I found Bono to be a bit pretentious and a hypocrite.

A classic example is in Honor of the 20th anniversary of the toppling of the Berlin Wall U2 built a wall in Berlin to keep non-ticket holders from seeing the conert.

Seriously? You think Bono is a sissy because he had back surgery and couldn’t do a tour, but a man that is willing to put his life in danger on a consistent basis and made a tv show about finding true love while the mother of his children hopes he’ll finally make a commitment to her is more admirable. A man that delays taking his insulin because he wants to get drunk instead. You have the criteria for admiration of people in music backwards. You base your admiration because you were unable to see your first rock concert. ITS A ROCK CONCERT, not a matter of life or death.

I’ve been on this and other Message Boards to know that Bono and U2 in General are VERY controversial in Ireland. 😊
