Is buying a fancy car a sin?

I find it interesting the number of “Is (random act) a sin?” threads started.

No offense to the OP but what I read when I see such a thread is “I want to do this and want to have people tell me it’s ok.” Think for yourself.

That said, I’d agree with what most others indicated. If you can easily afford to do so and still give what you can in terms of charity I don’t see how it could be.

Greed is a sin… purchasing things that are well within your price range that don’t keep you from taking care of your family or keep you from being charitable is not greedy.

I think some “is it a sin threads” can be seen with the point of view that you have. But some also can be seen as someone trying to explore their faith in a way they never have before and may only recently have begin to think about their previous actions possibly being sinful and wanting to sincerely avoid the occasion of sin in the future.

But back to the OP’s question, I think you have to consider the intent of owning a fancy or expensive car. Like someone said, are you wanting a more expensive car because of the quality and safety it provides, or is there another intent entirely, such as “showing off” to the neighborhood. Are you wanting the expensive car as a status symbol? It could still be an issue if one is still able to be charitable and still afford the expensive car if your intent to own one is only for “bragging rights” or because you are coveting your neighbor’s expensive car.
