One thing we must always recall in our thoughts and prayers about political matters is that the Apostolic Age was started by the Blessed Lord and King of the Universe, Jesus Christ, under Pontius Pilate. We must keep this fact on our minds because the Apostolic Age existed in the time of Roman Imperialism, which grew from the Roman Republic. All men at the time, learned and unlearned, would have known about the hierarchy assigned by Polybius to governments 250 years before. It was a common topic of discussion even in public houses, back when true men were expected to think critically and have a backbone.
Polybius wrote that there are six inherent forms of government, outside of which there is really nothing substantial. From beginning to end, in a cycle, these are:
- Royalty
- Monarchy
- Nobility
- Oligarchy
- Democracy
- Anarchy
In Form 1, the chaos of an anarchy or tribal society is curbed by a virtuous, noble, and good “Strong Man”: a Royal. In Form 2, the Royalist line degenerates over time due to the lack of noble men in succession (true nobility only coming out of hardship), and so Royals of the original line become mere hard-nosed tyrants: Monarchs.
In Form 3, the Nobility, consisting of many oppressed and good aristocrats who have become sick of the corrupt monarchs, throw them off and establish a rule of great councils and truly wise men: the Noble-Rule. In Form 4, the nobility generally go the same way of the old monarchs, for they rule in great wealth while everyone else dies of starvation, or they descend into orgies and bankrupt the society with their idiocies: an immoral Oligarchy.
In Form 5, a noble and hard-working peasantry realises what lack of sense the nobility has now, so it abolishes the Oligarchy: a Democracy of good men forms itself. In Form 6, the democratic urge descends further and further as more people demand equality and rights and votes for X, Y, and Z. It becomes a mess of ruin and stagnation, whereupon anarchy descends and all that’s left is one noble man in the darkness, who comes forth to renew the society.
Forms 1, 3, and 5 are all composed of noble and good men and women who wish the best for their religion, culture, and morality. Each one is characterised by a love for truth and hard-work, and they always come about when Forms 2, 4, and 6 have developed. Every single thinking man of the Ancient World (i.e. before A.D. 300) was familiar with this cyclical concept of government. God knew it, the Pharisees knew it, Peter knew it, and the Romans knew it. It was the Romans who tried to transcend the cycle and end it by combining Forms 1, 3, and 5 into an ultimate, unbreakable Royalty-Nobility-Democracy embodied in the balance between Consul-Senate-People. You see, the 3 good forms only fail because we are sinful and prone to ruin good things through our selfishness (a very Christian understanding). Rome lasted a very good long time because it had this basis, this strong foundation of the balanced tripartite government.
In my opinion, we must follow not only the Bible and have kings as Princes of Christ’s Kingdom (being examples of Him for the people), but we must also follow common sense and have an aristocratic and democratic mix as well. This form of government, this ultra-Christian government which tries to stop the river of sin through righteousness and patience, is not extant anywhere in the world. It must be a Monarchy, and I think most Traditionalist Catholics (be they American or British) know this by the brains God gave them.
