When searching for an on-line Catholic Bible I was offered the following link:
catholic.org/bible/

I placed it on my “favorites” and have had been using it for a while… one day I discovered that 1st and 2nd Thessalonians were missing… I gave it no thought. Later on I discovered that they have also excluded: Tobit, Judith, 1st and 2nd Maccabees, Wisdom, Sirach (Ecclesiasticus) and Baruch.

Recently, I e-mailed them asking for the reason why these 9 books were omitted–I was more forceful than that.

Has anyone visited this site or others like it that purport to supply a Catholic Bible but do not?

I would suspect this was an oversight on the part of the webmaster, or else he is using web resources that were provided to him with parts missing, rather than an intentional attempt on catholic.org’s part to redefine the Scriptures. I am sure they would appreciate any courteous message bringing this to their attention.

***Hi, Leopard!

…so they are a genuine Catholic organization?

My concern arose from the fact that they have not reply to my email… missing a sentence or two on a huge book as the Bible is understandable (from time to time I find typos in some of my personal Bibles)… what is not understandable is complete books being omitted–specially when those books are the same that non-Catholics reject as non-Biblical and some of the text thusly omitted contradict much of the non-Catholic agenda.

I have to admit that my query was so loaded because I have had too many “Catholic” internet searches end up on anti-Catholic sites, which can only be understood as a deliberate act to highjack the researcher and perhaps even lead him/her astray.

If your experience is that Catholic . org is a Catholic site, please take the time to verify my findings and bring the omissions to their attention (perhaps if more people were to complain the errors would be promtly corrected).

The review at CatholicCulture.org says:
The site is unfortunately marred by organizations and resources which either occasionally or consistently oppose the Magisterium. Catholic Online has great potential to be one of the best Catholic websites on the Internet – if consistent editorial judiciousness is used to root out the weaknesses that make it necessary to avoid some of its resources.

***Hi, CapaxDei!

Thanks for the link and the notation…

This would make perfect sense to me if I had not been visiting the site for some time now, and if they would check for errors: 9 books missing out of a Catholic Bible is not a typo! :banghead:

…then, there’s that little matter of avoiding responsibility by not acknowledging my email which brings to their attention the fact that 9 books (listed by title) were missing from their Bible search engine!

Yes, you are correct that it would be better had they responded to you in a prompt manner concerning this. Failure to do so makes them look unprofessional. I would question, though, if this failure should be characterized by you as avoiding responsibility. Are they, in fact, responsible to you? Are you a paying subscriber to their site or have you purchased advertising on their site which may be negatively impacted by deficiencies on this site?

My understanding from a brief view of the site is that it is a website with content freely provided to all visitors. If your relationship with them is just that, as a site visitor, then they do not in fact have any responsibility to respond to you, especially if your first e-mail to them may have been belligerent, as your original post suggests. Nor do you have any responsibility towards them. If they fail to meet your needs you need only stop going there and they will no longer collect whatever advertising revenues your visits may have generated.

My suspicion, though, is that probably the reason no one has responded to your e-mail is that no one has read it yet. I’m guessing that if this site has such big mistakes as those missing books from the Bible, it probably doesn’t have anyone maintaining it regularly.

Well, apparently he is venerated as one in the Byzantine tradition. Check out February 17:

(The above is an unofficial site.)
Yeah,I know. But he was not canonized by Rome. And he was not in communion with Rome, and held doctrines contrary to Rome, and didn’t belong to the Catholic Church.

***Hi, cradlecathlic!

…presently, I have more than twelve Bibles at home (some out on loan)–though I do use them while on line, it is difficult to search through hard copy and then there’s the time consuming task of transcribing (which opens for typos)… my concern was having access to an on-line or e-Bible that I could use for quick reference or search.

I currently have on my computer the Douray Rheims on an excellent search engine but I got it from a site which offered it with Wisdom and the other 6 books out of the format (can’t access them directly)…

I haven’t checked with EWTN or newadvent for a while so I do not know it they are offering an e-Bible… are you aware of such, and if so, which version?

It might be. It only takes one bad character in a line of code to cause other material not to display correctly, or at all.
***Hi, Leopard!

Your point has validity since computers, as ingenious as they are, are heavily flawed: they require obsolute perfection in order to operate.

…still… the omission of different books from different sections of the Bible could not originate from a simple error.

***Hi, Leopard!

I am not a paying subscriber; as far as monetary responsibility to me they have none.

I am Catholic; had they posted as a non-Catholic Christian site offering an on-line Bible I would have no problem with it–I keep the Bible Gateway on my list of favorites. However, since they advertised a Catholic Bible, I expected to find a Catholic Bible not a Catholicized version of the Bible.

…and yes, I stopped using their site as soon as I noticed that they have all of those books missing!

…this of course is relative (depends upon the individual personal view); I do not know every Catholic mind in the US or the world… but I’m sure that more than a few are not familiar with the Bible (though they may even keep one at home); searching, as I did, for a Catholic Bible on-line could very well lead them to the same truncated Bible which I found… not knowing any different, they might accept this particular on-line Bible as just another version of the Holy Scriptures; confusion would ensue if they meet non-Catholics who are trained to believe that Catholics have added books to the Bible. They would easily be persuaded to accept that error as truth since their point of reference is that very site that offers a “Catholic Bible” which contain less books; ergo, it’s true Catholics have added books to the Bible!

That did not occurred to me. It could very well be that no one is watching the store! 😛

There is another site from Duquette University that offers an even worse NJB; worse, in that it not only omits whole books, but uses the text of the RSV and substitutes “Yahweh” for “the LORD”. Forget about writing to anyone there; the webmaster has long since abandoned the site.

Thanks for pointing out the missing books; I hadn’t noticed, probably because the “proof texts” I was using didn’t require them.

I guess I’ll have to accept the fact that the NJB is NOT really online for the present.

And, while I’m at it, neither is the RSV-CE online, despite how much anyone jumps up/down and says it is. We’ve “been there, done that”; it’s a hybrid of the RSV with a VERY FEW renderings from the Catholic Edition thrown in.

***Hi, Manfred!

…what service are they supposed to be rendering? Why do a shabby job and call it a completed work?

I would understand it if they announce that the site is a work in progress and that they welcome collaborators to complete the task.

…and that job done to the RSV-CE… what, they gave a bunch of 2nd and 3rd graders the task to cut and paste? …never mind about unprofessional, that’s an outright lazyboy mentality! 😛

…in matters of the Word of God, people should be less quick to be the first to publish and more interested in rendering His Sacred Scriptures to the best of their abilities; they (we) should strive to emulate Abel not Cain!
