Is Cheating on Single Player Computer Games Wrong?

The point of a single player game is to have fun. Breaking the rules doesn’t cheat anyone, other than possibly yourself. If giving yourself an edge you wouldn’t otherwise have makes you happy, what harm is there?

It’s worth noting too that a lot of games (computer and console) have cheats built in and accessible within the game itself. I’m just speculating, but the origin could have to do with people complaining about ā€œunwinnable levelsā€ in certain games and giving them a way to complete them and move on to the rest of the game.

On some games, it’s also not so much of a ā€œcheatā€ as much as a ā€œrewardā€ too. I remember some Bond games will ā€œunlockā€ stuff if you reach a certain level (like big heads :D), and I think in Banjo-Tooie (just to give an example of something I remember) you had to literally collect ā€œcheat pagesā€ before you could unlock them. Sometimes they can make the game more fun (like unlimited ammo in Goldeneye), and the primary purpose of (most) games is to have fun.

The only thing I’d think would be bad is if cheating in a game spilled over into the real world and encouraged someone to try and take an ā€œeasier pathā€ instead of playing fair like everyone else. For most people, this shouldn’t be a problem because they can separate their real life from their ā€œin game lifeā€.

Yes, those Goldeye cheats were darn hard to unlock, though! And you could only use them on levels you already beat. The one cheat I could never unlock was the Cavern level. It will always remain a blemish on my otherwise perfect record. šŸ˜›
