Yes, I consider cheating to be cheating.
Now, as to the question in the thread title on whether or not it is wrong, I would say the obvious answer is no. A game is just a game. If youāre playing by yourself, I see no reason why anyone would be morally obligated to follow the rules in precisely the way in which the gameās creator articulated them.
If youāre talking about ācheatingā by writing hacking codes or other such things, then that would be a bit different. But any potential immorality would be because of any potential legal infractions, not because of ācheatingā per se.

I have a similar qualms when playing games when you are presented with āgoodā or āevilā choices like in Morrowind or Oblivion. Is it a sin to pick the āevilā side? I donāt think it is, but it still bothers my conscience.

On single player games, I have cheated in order to get through a story line quickly when I realized that the game was taking too much of my time. At that time, I was just playing for the story, anyway.
I donāt do it for high scores, however.

What about killing on a computer game? A shoot me up? Nowadays the graphics are very life-like. I would suggest in some computer games grave matter may on rare occasions be present. Lets face it GTA is an objectively evil venture

When playing solo, cheating is not morally wrong because thereās nobody there to be cheated, and nothing to cheat them of.
Depending on the game and on why you enjoy it, cheating might reduce your enjoyment; but thatās purely a matter of personal choice. I often use cheats or āmodsā to give myself an advantage in a game.
Cheating in a multiplayer game would be an entirely different matter.

It is a never-ending frustration to me, when I try to cheat myslef & am met by a snippy-sounding little message of āThat move is not allowedā.

I used to enter the cheat codes all the time for Sim City.
Thereās no moral consequence though, so itās not wrong. In any case, the fact that such cheat codes are available, even if not given to you on a platter so you have to work to find them, means that the writer of the game doesnāt mind if you use them (not that it would matter much if he did, since a: heād never know, and b: itās a single player game with no direct worldly consequences anyway).
The only way it could possibly matter would be if there was some sort of tournament or competition whereby you could illegitimately gain higher ranking at the expense of others who havenāt cheated and thereby conning people into thinking they were less skilled than they really are and denying them the satisfaction they were due. Since the game in this example is played in isolation, itās irrelevant. Youāre playing just for your own personal enjoyment. How you achieve that in-game is up to you.

Itās a bit like cheating at excersize isnāt? The only person youāre cheating is yourself.
I use to play aoe 2 &3. I entered a cheat code during single play, just to make it easy during a difficult stage. Found myself doing it all the time, every time it got a little bit difficult. Sort of stopped my enjoyment of the game.

No. But it is silly! My fiance and I both play fantasy RPGāsāhe, when presented with a fork in the storyline (choosing some reward or another, etc), will pause the game, go online, and read up on which is the ābestā or ārightā choice. Drives me crazy!!! What is the point of playing the game?
