Is Christianity a religion of convenience?

I was recently discussing my faith with an atheist friend who brought up that Christianity is a religion of convenience. He brought up that any fallacies in the church or its people being attributed to its humanity is a convenient fallback. How should I refute this?

Any religion that has had as many martyrs as Christianity has had for over two thousand years, is hardly a religion of convenience.
