What is the rule or guideline concerning clapping during Mass? This question came up following a survey we conducted in our parish. At least one parishioner believes that it is forbidden for anyone to clap at any time during Mass. Our experience has been that it only occurs whenever someone is recognized for a special event - First Holy Communion; Confirmation; 50th wedding anniversary recognition; etc. Most people feel that we celebrate the Mass with both reverence and with a welcoming spirit. But we would like clarification on this so that we can be assured that we’re in line with the Church’s teaching on this matter. Thank you.
