At our parish, the Christmas Masses are so popular that we run out of seats. In order to accommodate everyone, we have a large meeting space in our basement, and use it for an overflow area. There is a video camera, and the Mass is broadcast over closed caption video to the basement area. At Communion time, the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion come down to distribute.
First question, is this acceptable/valid participation for those in the basement?
Second question, what would be an acceptable physical distance from the “main” celebration of the Mass? For example, would it be okay if the overflow were in a different building, having Communion distributed there?
