Is closed Communion against Jesus's all welcoming message?

I’m a 19 year old college student in Texas who has gone to Catholic school my whole life. Since being in college, I have found it very fascinating to discuss what others believe. In one of my discussions with a friend who was very knowledgable about Catholocism (he is nondenominational), I was asked if I agree that a closed Communion turns people away from God? If it went against Jesus’s message to welcome all to worship God?

The only argument I have ever known is ‘since we believe it is actually Jesus in flesh and blood, we ask that if you do not believe in this, do not receive Communion at our mass’. He understood this request of respect that we ask for our Communion, but his question of exclusion still exists and I don’t know what to say. Thanks, Katie.
