Suppose you’re hammering a nail and hammer your thumb instead, and cry out the F-word. Is that a sin? The same question goes for other curse words like motherf-----
and s—.

Well, God gave us the gift of language, and it’s not exactly using His gift to His glory to be swearing, is it? More like abusing it. So I reckon for the most part it would be sinfulm like abusing the gifts of food, alcohol, sex or what have you.

Certainly the hitting your thumb means it would only be a venial sin at most. My own view is that unless you’re taking the name of Our Lord or Our Lady - or some other holy person or object - in vain as a curseword, or calling upon Him to d**n someone or something, it’s probably not a mortal sin under any circumstances.

A highly undesirable behaviour though - time to bring out the ol’ swear jar.

Course language is never attractive to those who have to hear it. When one hits his thumb or stubs his toe, I am certain it is no serious sin, but when one cultivates and purposely uses course language it has to be at least a venial sin and if the names of our Lord are purposely and with forethought used in vain it becomes very questionable as to whether one might not have sufficent grave matter and forethought to sin mortally. Both course language and cursing are things no gentleman or lady should cultivate. To do so is to build a very unattractive habit which can be difficult to break. I can give witness from my own past history as to how embarassing such a habit can be when one, without thinking, bursts out with such language in front of good people. 🙂

If a tree falls in the middle of the forest, and it falls on your foot and you utter an “oath”, an nobody else hears it, is it still a sin? 😃

Is the use of coarce language it self sinfull? No, I think not. But, rarely is it used where there are no ears to listen. I think the sins that can (and do) occure from using coarce language are, scandle and putting you’re self in temptation to go from using coarce language to using the Lords name in vain.
Pslams and Proverbs and many other books in the Bible talk about not using perverted language. I thing we should take that same advice in using coarce language too.

Coarse language is always bad. That is why it’s called coarse. If people are civilized then they should be civil towards each other, and that means using polite speech. The Bible tells us to control our tongue.

Peace,
Ed

I would’nt sweat the hammer on the thumb explitive too much. But controling bad language is something we should strive for. Especially if you’re like me 😊
