Hello all,
I didn’t grow up in the church and my training in college to become a Catholic wasn’t very complete in some areas (although very full of love which was wonderful). Today I heard a Protestant religious show mention that complaining really is a sin. I had not heard that before and therefore wondered if this was true according to the Catholic church. If so, I need to get back into the confessional asap:)
Thank you for your help!
God Bless you all!!!

If that’s the case, then more than half of the past week’s posters here on CAF need to head to the confessional along with you 😉 A good portion of the threads here contain complaints of all sorts.

I would think that if you wallow in it, then spread your complaint as gossip and rumors you might step over the line into sin. Openingly discussing problems and then trying to find reasonable solutions isn’t. It’s not just a blanket sin.

Being deprecating, insulting or disrespectful are not goo things to do. Constructive criticism can be a positive thing. I would say that complaining can be a bad thing. It depends on context, motivation, and how you do it.

So, what is the line?
You might consider comparing virtues and their opposing sins as a way of finding the line.

Lust - - Chastity
Gluttony - - Temperance
Greed - - Charity
Sloth - - Diligence
Wrath - - Patience
Envy - - Kindness
Pride - - Humility

An easy example would be if a person spent a lot of time complaining about how messy their house is, but then not being diligent about cleaning it and keeping habits which keep it clean in the first place.

I hope this helps

God bless

So, what is the line?
Difficult to say.

Sinful complaining might be for example – nagging someone in not good way or always pointing out where they go wrong etc…

Can there be just reasonable complaints? Sure.

Hi --I purchased this tv from your company and the picture is now working correctly…

Hi - your the manager right? well I have noted several times to the cook that he does not cook my steak well done --and it is still not done. Can you do something to see that it is cooked well next time?

So, what is the line?
There can be many but one that comes up is that you are upset about something and you may be correct in what you think and feel. But instead of talking about it with those concerned you go around to everyone and anyone with your complaint not to look for solutions but to have everyone on your side and in your wagon. I think complaining goes over the line is when your complaint is not looking for solutions but turns into gossip and rumors and stops looking to solve the problem.

Again, thank you all. You have really been very helpful to me today!!!
God Bless!!

When I complain about something my wife does – it is not a sin.

If my wife would complain about something I do --it is.

The following scripture verse is posted on my fridge for our family. Hope it helps 🙂

“Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine likes stars in the universe.” Phillipians 2:14-15

“Each must do as already determined, without sadness or compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians 9:7

Complaining is the sin of PRIDE as well as lack of appreciation. Both of these can go together or separate. A great antidote is to do the Litany of Humilty.

Thank you for posting this!

I definitely need to work on complaining less, and I think this Litany may become a regular prayer for me! 🙂

‘Complain as little as possible of your wrongs, for as a general rule you may be sure that complaining is sin; the rather that self-love always magnifies our injuries: above all, do not complain to people who are easily angered and excited. If it is needful to complain to some one, either as seeking a remedy for your injury, or in order to soothe your mind, let it be to some calm, gentle spirit, greatly filled with the Love of God; for otherwise, instead of relieving your heart, your confidants will only provoke it to still greater disturbance; instead of taking out the thorn which pricks you, they will drive it further into your foot.’

St. Francis de Sales

‘Let us go to the foot of the Cross, and there complain – if we have the courage.’

St. Madeleine Sophie Barat

‘You will not dispute nor show your repugnance and aversion, for meekness makes us bear everything without complaining.’

St. Margaret Mary Alacoque

‘Repose on the naked cross, and make no other complaint than this infantine cry: “My Father, my Father, Thy will be done!” and then be silent.’

St. Paul of the Cross

‘To labor, to suffer, to be silent, to complain not, to bear no resentment - these are the maxims of the saints, the maxims of a high perfection.’

St. Paul of the Cross

‘O the supreme folly of those who resist the divine will! In God’s providence, no one can escape hardship: “Who resisteth his will?” (Rom 9:19) A person, who rails at God in adversity, suffers without merit; moreover by his lack of resignation he adds to his punishment in the next life and experiences greater disquietude of mind in this life: “Who resisteth him and hath had peace?” (Job 9:4) The screaming rage of the sick man in his pain, the whining complaints of the poor man in his destitution – what will they avail these people, except increase their unhappiness and bring them no relief? “Little man,” says St. Augustine, “grow up. What are you seeking in your search for happiness? Seek the one good that embraces all others.” Whom do you seek, friend, if you seek not God? Seek him, find him, cleave to him; bind your will to his with bands of steel and you will live always at peace in this life and in the next.’

St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori
